The life of a model always seems glamorous from the outside, but it also involves very hard work in an industry that isn't always super supportive. The 26-year-old Victoria's Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel opens up about this darker reality in a new interview with SELF Magazine, recalling an earlier time when she was so unhappy she almost quit altogether. After being scouted at age 15 in her homeland of South Africa, Swanepoel took the risk of moving to Europe to try and forge a career. While you might expect her to share the excitement she felt back then, Swanepoel instead remembers the extreme loneliness that came with it:
"Every day, I was working with different people who were speaking different languages, so I was never able to form any relationships. I just wanted to go home."
On top of that, she was constantly being told to lose more weight. “I was so used to people criticising me for being too thin that it was shocking to me,” she tells the magazine, “I was [always] crying.” By age 17, these negative experiences had her wondering if she should leave the modelling world behind for good. Lucky for us, Victoria's Secret called just in time, offering her the gig she had always dreamed of and simply couldn't pass down.
