Spring 11 Handbags

We've just about finished our spring fashion prep work, but there's one more important task we must attend to before we'll feel officially organised. Thus far, we've discussed a few noteworthy trends, divulged some of our favourite clothing and beauty products, and introduced you to a must-buy-now shoe shape, which leads us to our next order of business: addressing the season's covetable selection of handbags! We're quite delighted by the range of shapes and vibrant hues on the market right now, and are so excited to see what the top trendsetters will be toting this spring. We have our own predictions, of course, and are thrilled to reveal them in today's What Would She Wear: S/S 11 Handbags story! Read on for all of our ideas--from Alexander Wang to Yves Saint Laurent--and don't forget to tell us which super-chic bag is topping your wish list!

Olivia Palermo/ Yves Saint Laurent Muse Two Multi-Colour Leather Tote ($1950, 212.980.2970)
One of the things we like best about Olivia Palermo is her ability to construct thoughtful, polished ensembles. Always flawlessly turned out wherever she goes, the brunette beauty has mastered the art of infusing ladylike looks with youthful accents. Accordingly, we knew she'd be the perfect match for the Yves Saint Laurent Muse Multi-Colour Tote. It's sophisticated and chic, just like Palermo, not to mention we think she'd be drawn to the bag's playful patches of colour, which give the classic carryall a cool, modern twist. We also approve of MICHAEL Michael Kors' Hamilton Tote ($348), which is a more wallet-friendly alternative in a fun electric blue colour that's perfect for spring!

Rihanna/ Proenza Schouler Mesh Lizard Folded Top Handle Bag ($2500, 212.826.8900)
Not including a Proenza Schouler carrier in our seasonal handbag stories is an impossible task. We're still in love with the PS1--and probably always will be--and its more structured sister, the PS11, stole our hearts the minute we first laid eyes on it. Accordingly, it's probably no surprise that we're head-over-heels for the latest style to come from the designer duo: the Mesh Lizard Folded Top Handle Bag. We also have a feeling that Rihanna will be smitten with this super-cool purse too. Our reasoning is simple: this bag's intriguing mesh detailing speaks to the stylish singer's cutting-edge sensibilities, while the crisp white colour is an excellent choice for spring and the perfect contrasting hue for her more dramatic sartorial moments. And though we can't bear the thought of not owning this bag, Foley + Corinna's Classic Disco City Clutch ($198) and Brahmin Claudia's Croco-Embossed Satchel ($225) are both guilt-free substitutions that are equally noteworthy.

Charlize Theron/ Alexander Wang Emile Small Tote ($650) in Burlap
It's always a good idea to have a chic top-handle carryall on hand, which is why the Emile Tote by Alexander Wang is currently on our must-buy-immediately list. We adore the bag's quirky, bowling-bag shape and, based on our careful observations, have a hunch Charlize Theron would approve too; she has a predilection for oversized, neutral totes. Even better: this bag is perfect for a resort getaway or a polished city look, thanks to its natural burlap material and dark leather trim. We also have our eyes on ASOS' Canvas Strapping Bag ($99), so be sure to check out this affordable option too!

Kirsten Dunst/ Calvin Klein Collection Large Shoulder Bag ($2495, 212.292.9000) in Coral
If we've learned anything from our obsession with Kirsten Dunst's incredible sense of style, it's that she typically goes for an unfussy look, which applies to her accessories as well! Often favouring hands-free, across-body styles, we knew she'd appreciate this satchel by Calvin Klein Collection as much as we do. Its simple shape and sleek flap-top design has a bit of that '70s vibe she favours, plus it will work well with minimalist ensembles and the vibrant coral hue is perfect in keeping with the season's ultra-bright colour trend. If that price tag is a little too steep for your liking, we suggest snagging ASOS' Contrast Handle Flat Lock Across Body Bag ($27) or Forever 21's Date Night Leatherette Bag ($21); both offer a similar shape and colour, but at a fraction of the cost!

Jessica Alba/ Mulberry Tillie Bag ($1175, 212.453.4722) in Black
By now you probably know that we're complete suckers for Mulberry's wonderful bags. While last season's leopard Neely Tote was our handbag obsession, we're absolutely mad about the brand's sophisticated satchel for spring: the Tillie! As for our celeb match, we believe Jessica Alba would be a fan of the bag's contemporary shape and chic metal hardware--it's universally appealing, no? Also available in powder beige and chestnut, the Tillie is definitely worth the investment, but if the serious price tag doesn't quite fit your spring wardrobe budget, Marc B's Lace Sofia Bag ($90) and Topshop's Black Aged Snake Effect Leather Satchel ($125) are spot-on alternatives you don't want to miss.--Jessica Baker
