When you think of the cosmopolitan city where most tourists shop, what’s the first destination that comes to mind? For this editor, it would undoubtedly be New York City or Paris. Well, believe it or not, it’s actually Milan. According to a piece in WWD and further reported on by Glamour, tourists spend $1,486 in Milan, compared to just $800 in NYC. Keep in mind, though, the company conducting this research also operates Italian airports and consulting firm Pambianco Strategie di Impresa, but still, numbers are numbers.
The primary reason for Milanese spending? Many that flock the city visit with shopping as the main purpose, versus the other cities with additional attractions (think: the Eiffel Tower and Times Square).
