Let's face it shopping for a new pair of jeans can be daunting, which is why we are declaring this week Denim Week on Who What Wear UK. For the next seven days we will be equipping you with all the info you could possibly need so you will be excited to start your hunt for your next pair (or pairs) of jeans.
If you've ever been pregnant, you know that maternity jeans can be a real saviour for your wardrobe. As your waistline expands, everything starts to not fit quite so well (sob!), and it can get uncomfortable—not to mention expensive. But if you have some decent denim options at your disposal, you can at least wear some of your looser tops over your bump. And there are some brilliant jeans that can help with that.
Topshop's maternity range delivers on comfort and style, making it exactly what every mum-to-be is looking for (I know, because I am one). The company's denim section in particular is brilliant: It now features maternity versions of its most popular styles. My insider at Topshop told me that the brand's over-the-bump Joni jeans in black are the best-selling style.
As part of our We Try Before You Buy series, I spent an afternoon trying on Topshop's maternity jeans to come up with a definitive list of the best every woman will want in her wardrobe, should she ever be pregnant and in need of something that fits and doesn't make her feel constricted. Keep scrolling to see my verdict.
1. THE DROP-KICK FLARES
On Elinor: Topshop Maternity Dree Jeans (£40)
The verdict: If you're not a fan of over-the-bump jeans and are keen on the kick-flare style, these are definitely for you. I would suggest you go up a couple of sizes from your usual, as these are tighter around the thighs, although every body is different.
2. THE BLUE SKINNIES
On Elinor: Topshop Maternity Over-the-Bump Joni Jeans (£38)
The verdict: These are so comfy. While they pull on like leggings, they look and feel like actual jeans. They look great with sneakers and will work for the office as well as weekends. I'm sold. Take your true size for these ones.
3. THE DUNGAREES
On Elinor: Topshop Maternity Slim Denim Dungarees (£49)
The verdict: It's a cliché, but dungarees look really cute on a pregnant body, no? That said, they're not always the most practical when it comes to those frequent toilet breaks (if you know, you know). That being said, these were comfortable but sturdy. You probably won't find them as easy to wear in the later months though, as they're not as stretchy as the other pairs.
4. THE STRAIGHT-LEG
On Elinor: Topshop Maternity Mid Stone Straight Leg Jeans (£40)
The verdict: Similar to the Dree (top pair), these are more true to the current trends. This pair features a straight leg with a slight frayed hem. These aren't over-the-bump, but they're still comfortable, provided you take a size up from your usual.
5. THE BLACK SKINNIES
On Elinor: Topshop Maternity Black Joni Jeans (£38)
The verdict: Okay, I can why these are the most-bought from Topshop. They're super flattering and slip on really easily. You can take your true size, but the over-the-bump cover makes them even more comfortable. You'll feel almost like your "normal" self. Winner.
Your maternity wardrobe doesn't look so bad now, does it?
