For those of us who live in trousers 90% of the year, summer can be a tricky time. You can't move an inch without being drowned in a tidal wave of new-in frocks, each one more floral and floaty than the last. Trousers, meanwhile, seem to quietly duck out of the spotlight and hibernate until September comes round again. But not if we have anything to do with it.
Believe it or not, it's just as easy to create a statement summer ensemble with a fab pair of trousers as it is with a dress or skirt—especially if you're working with the variety on offer this season. It's time to put your jeans to one side and embrace the leg-lengthening, power-dressing potential of trousers.
Obviously, when the mercury rises, you don't want to be sweating under a pair of cords, so the new season's offerings are all about light fabrics in vibrant prints and sophisticated cuts. Wide-leg cuts are common amongst the top five and are surely the easiest to wear of them all, especially when they're high-waisted. Update yours with gingham (so good with a white tee), snake print (just pair with a workwear jacket) or a classic shade of camel (go head-to-toe tonal for a high-end finish).
There's also the obligatory throwback, and this season, it's cargo trousers. It might be reminiscent of '90s girl bands, but new cargos should be treated the same as any other tailored style. We particularly love Lorod's luxe navy iteration, which will pair nicely with a white shirt or tank top. (Hey—don't knock it until you've tried it.) Styles Notes: Pink has had a serious rebranding over the last 12 months, and its most recent reincarnation is in the form of pink trousers. The key to working this item is to pair them with unexpected colours, such as green.
Styles Notes: The industry's fascination with all things animal print is still going strong, as evidenced by this extroverted trend. Snake-print trousers are sure to add personality to any outfit—just make sure to keep the rest of your look low-key.
Style Notes: Minimalists have been all over wide-leg, camel-coloured trousers this season, and we love that they've transitioned from a workwear staple to weekend winner. It's all about balancing out the smart lines with sporty separates, as seen in Oumaya's high-low ensemble.
