5 Swimwear Trends We're Championing for Summer 2020

While summer 2020 is certainly set to be different from years past, that does not mean there is no use for swimwear this year. Although we might not be jetting off to sun-drenched locations or lounging by Mediterranean beaches, swimwear will still be practical for the likes of sunbathing on the balcony, spending days in the park or, if you're lucky, lying poolside in the backyard.

So let's talk trends. As far as swimwear and bikini trends are concerned, many of the most popular styles of the season reflect the same trends that have gained traction elsewhere. Tie-dye, for example, was all over the S/S 20 runways—from Versace to Isabel Marant to Dior and more—and evidently has maintained its prominence across beachwear, as surf-inspired, colourful tie-dye bikinis are available across high-street and designer brands.

Vintage-inspired prints are also having a moment, reflecting the busy floral patterns that appeared across wallpaper in the '70s (and still in my grandparents' home today). The trend maintains its retro sensibility when paired with high-waisted bikinis or one-piece silhouettes for a true vintage feel. Gingham, summer’s most enduring print, is also back for another season. This year, we're seeing iterations of it across different scales, spanning miniature and oversize checks. Yes, summer might be a little different this year, but there's no reason our affinity for swimwear has to change.

Style Notes: As the perennial summer print, it's hardly a surprise that gingham swimwear is everywhere again this season. The print has a classic appeal that will stand the test of time, summer after summer.

Tie-Dye

Style Notes: After trickling down from the S/S 20 runways, tie-dye is having quite the moment this summer. With rainbow colourways and interesting shapes, this season, the trend has been reinterpreted in a contemporary way, despite the fact that tie-dye has been around for quite some time.

Shirred

Style Notes: Shirred swimwear has been gaining traction for a few seasons, but this year, we've seen the look truly take off. The fabric is comfortable and moulds to your figure in a beautiful way.

High-Waisted

Style Notes: A forever favourite, high-waisted bikinis return each season in new and different iterations. While the shape of the bikini bottoms offers more coverage, the separate bikini top allows you to show off your personal style by choosing a design that suits your aesthetic.

Vintage-Inspired Prints

Style Notes: Often reminiscent of the wallpaper prints you'd find strewn across homes in the '70s, vintage prints have now taken up residence on our swimwear. From paisleys to florals, these prints carry a decidedly retro feel and are often paired alongside retro-inspired silhouettes.
