Whether you’re a pro on the slopes or your priority is raclette and fondue, there's no disputing that getting dressed for the slopes is fun. I mean, it has to be, right? Before you even start skiing, the whole experience is exhausting. Just walking in those heavy boots is a week’s worth of squats, and that’s before you even try to carry your skis. But if there’s anything that will get me enthusiastic about an activity, it’s a cool wardrobe.
That said, technical skiwear is an investment. After all, expert technology goes into developing each garment to ensure it's warm, waterproof and durable at the same time, which is why it’s no surprise ski-clothing rental is one of the biggest areas of growth in the fashion rental market right now. Specialist site Blanqo recently launched with a concise edit of stylish ski-wardrobe essentials, featuring brands such as Poivre Blanc, which means instead of having to fork out over £500 for a ski jacket, you can rent it from £50. As someone who started learning to ski later in life and clearly has a long way to go, this was music to my ears.
But how to choose what to wear? Gone are the days of plain black, white or red oufits. You can be as creative as you want, and I’ve been told that what I lack in technique I make up for with my outfits, so when it comes to spotting the hottest trends on the slopes this season, I have you covered. Here are some of my favourite influencers showcasing the must-have skiwear trends for 2022, including the new-season colour palettes, prints and accessories.
1. Pastels
The past few seasons has seen the rise in popularity of retro ski suits only to be cemented as one of the most high-fashion trends by Miuccia Prada. Her A/W 21 collection for Miu Miu showcased on a mountain in Italy featured dusty pastel onesies and padded co-ords. And whilst her pastel padded jacket retails at over £2000, this is definitely one of the easiest and comfiest trends to replicate. Influencer Thássia Naves recently wore LoveShackFancy’s latest collab with ski brand Bogner Fire + Ice in head-to-toe pastel florals, whilst Marta Sierra and Marta Lozano’s formula of Snowroller onesies + moon boots + furry hat is what I’ll be hitting the French snow in next month.
2. New-Age Trad
The traditional ski palette of black, white, red and navy is anything but boring for 2022 and continues to be one of the most popular ski trends amongst the mountain regulars. Influencers from Danielle Bernstein to Swedish actress Zoë Pastelle have all been filling their grids with these monochromatic looks. Timeless prints such as houndstooth and plaid add interest, whilst key details such as the must-have Celine goggles, shearling collars and high-shine metallics together create one of the chicest looks whether you're testing your skills on a black slope or catching some rays at the top of the mountain.
3. Chic Neutrals
Head-to-toe colour is a trend that is showing staying power throughout 2022, and what better than winter whites to make a statement on the slopes? Chloé’s collaboration with Moon Boots in cream shearling and tan leather have set the tone for this trend, and the key is in the texture. Look to Laura Wills and Vivian Hoorn for winter-white styling inspo, from Perfect Moment’s ski knits to Fendi’s monogram base layers.
4. Extrovert Brights
Skiwear traditionally has been limited to a palette of black, white, red and navy. But as the lines between wardrobes on and off the slopes merge and with the rise of designer collaborations such as Gucci x The North Face, anything goes. From rainbow brights to knitted balaclavas, London-based boutique Koibird’s edit of vibrant skiwear is a visual feast for even the most amateur of skiers.
