Emma Roberts

While it's difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when Emma Roberts cemented her place on our one-to-watch list, we can certainly tell you why she's there. For starters, she's a ridiculously talented actress--you definitely need to put It's Kind of a Funny Story in your Netflix queue and be sure to check out her highly-anticipated horror flick Scream 4, which hits theatres this Friday--plus she's also proven herself to be quite the stylephile. Whether she's experimenting with energetic prints and colours, constructing modern bohemian ensembles, or going for something a little more youthful and edgy, Roberts consistently demonstrates she can handle a range of looks, making her the perfect subject for today's Style Spotlight.

One of the first things that drew us to Roberts was her ability to wear bold colours and eye-catching prints in an effortlessly intriguing way. Take, for example, the cobalt blue Michael Kors Pre-Fall 11 dress she wore to the designer's F/W 11 show earlier this year (top row, right). The frock is definitely a playful choice, thanks to the energetic hue and tiny accordion pleats, but by styling it with simple black accents--specifically a Michael Kors belt, Lauren Merkin clutch, and Brian Atwood heels--she keeps the look from feeling too sweet. But her knack for creating spirited-yet-refined ensembles doesn't stop there! A few months earlier at the Boutiques.com launch party in New York (far right), Roberts turned up in Zac Posen's Ocelot Print Blouse ($990) and Bondage Jersey Skinny Pants ($975, 877.551.7257), accessorized with chunky Chloe peep-toe pumps. The sober, sleek pants balance out the femininity of her whimsical, romantic top, and the result is a lovely downtown-lady look.

While we know Roberts is fond of lively colours and prints, she also appreciates bohemian-inspired pieces as well, like of-the-moment maxi dresses. Whether it's on the red carpet or at a fashion event, it's clear our style subject knows how to work a floor-grazing silhouette. Case in point: the stunning light blue pleated dress from Topshop she wore to the British Independent Film Awards in London late last year (bottom row, left). Roberts accessorized her look with an oversized flower necklace and blush-pink croc clutch, both by Miu Miu, resulting in a smart high-low mix. Of course she doesn't reserve this silhouette for red-carpet occasions alone. Just last week, at a TEXTILE Elizabeth and James party at the Beverly Hills Hotel (top row, middle), we came across Roberts in Isabel Lu's Pleated Floral Maxi Dress ($276, available at the end of May). This time, she styled her maxi with a thin vintage leather belt and TEXTILE Elizabeth and James' Sid Denim Jacket ($295), which give the frock some understated cool.

As we mentioned earlier, Roberts can handle a slew of looks, so we're not surprised to see her wardrobe extends beyond cheery colour palettes and ethereal frocks. We've also spotted the actress sporting edgier outfits on a few different occasions, and the resulting ensembles were equally noteworthy. For example, at a Golden Globes pre-party back in January (bottom row, center), Roberts showed up in a killer black-on-black ensemble with some tough-girl elements--specifically, a Firetrap leather jacket and silver body chain--that made her outfit really stand out. A few days later, at the Sundance premiere of Homework--her latest indie project, which is expected to release sometime this year--she went for another all-noir outfit (bottom row, right), only this time she added visual intrigue via McGinn's Ivy Striped Jacket ($193, 800.695.8000). And finally, at the 2011 People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles earlier this year (top row, left), we found the blondish beauty in Christian Dior's Tahiti Bustier Dress ($6800, 800.929.DIOR) paired with Brian Atwood's Maniac Pumps ($580). Her polished, slicked-back hair and gold patent leather heels elevate the frock's simple silhouette, making it the perfect party ensemble.

So what's truly the best part about Roberts' repertoire of ensembles? It's easy to replicate! Just pick up a few of our suggested items and you'll be channeling the actress in no time! If you love a wild print or bold colour just as much as our style subject does, please don't miss Goldie Oriental's Print Cropped Big Pocket Sheer Shirt ($88)--just be sure to style it with a pair of trousers like Acne's Sensational Pants ($270) to keep your outfit looking sophisticated--and Coast's Ciara Dress with One Shoulder ($242), which is a spot-on alternative to Roberts' Michael Kors dress. To further achieve that winning look, we suggest adding ASOS' Metal Keeper Patent Super Skinny Waist Belt ($11), Topshop's Gracey Black Patent Asymmetric Cut Out Sandals ($130), and a pair of opaque tights.

If you'd rather try a maxi dress instead, don't miss Bird by Juicy Couture's Stormy Print Long Dress ($378) or Staple's Printed Layered Racer Back Maxi Dress ($179). Headed out to a fancy evening fete? Keep your look simple and accessorize either maxi option with IMoshion's Ruth Clutch ($65). Going to a music festival or afternoon BBQ? Cinch the waist with Cheap Monday's Fay Belt ($30) and throw on J. Crew's Nolita Denim Jacket ($98).

We also found some pieces that emulate Roberts' edgier outfits. A leather jacket is a wardrobe must-have, so if you don't already own one, Topshop's Black Cropped PU Biker Jacket ($110) and Sparkle and Fade's Faux Leather Hooded Bomber ($98) are both incredibly affordable options you must check out. On an accessories note, we recommend trying a body chain, like Cornelia Webb's Knotted Body Chain ($100) or LuvAj's The Black Magic Bodychain ($132); they're very cool alternatives to a necklace. And last, but certainly not least, if you're in the market for something similar to her party-perfect Christian Dior pick, be sure to snag Rare's Chiffon Bandeau Dress ($110) or ASOS' Folded Origami One Shoulder Dress ($72) today!--Jessica Baker
