9 Street Style Trends That Will Impact How You Dress This Year

Street style pictures can often have a performative quality to them, as many outfits are deliberately chosen in order to stand out and garner maximum attention. However, this year among the clickbait styling, there have been plenty of trends that have actually influenced how we all get dressed. There are certain trends that are actually resonating outside of the fashion-week sphere, and these are divided into two camps.

On one end, there has been a move toward more polished, grown-up styling, and the outfit we saw the most at the shows in February was head-to-toe beige. Tailored trousers, refined pearl jewellery, pleated skirts and ladylike headbands kept appearing in the thousands of pictures our photographer who was stationed outside the shows captured. However, there has also been a move towards more playful pieces you might not have worn since you were eight, such as tie-dye T-shirts and highlighter colours.

Keep scrolling to see the nine street style trends that are impacting how women dress this year.

1. Vest Top and Trousers

The most popular street style moment from 2018 was arguably when Julie Pelipas, Vogue Ukraine's fashion director, wore paper-bag trousers with a vest top. It's an outfit that has been re-created by many of her fashion peers this year.

2. Tie-Dye

Surf culture is one of the key trends for this summer, with tie-dye sweatshirts, cycling shorts and pukka necklaces trending—everything from Prada handbags to scrunchies has had a swirly makeover.

3. Head-to-toe Beige

One outfit has proved the most popular this year: all-beige outfits. This looks expensive but is surprisingly easy to re-create, as you all you have to do is layer soft colours like oatmeal, biscuit, blush and off-white. You should also mix textures and silhouettes.

4. Neon

Neon is one of those trends that I thought would remain firmly within the Kardashian-Jenner family, but at fashion month, many showgoers had a more subtle approach to acid colours. The best way to wear this trend is to have a flash of fluoro and not make it the dominant colour. That way, you won't look like a human glow stick.

5. Headbands

Prada has a habit of creating street style trends that go viral seemingly overnight, and for spring, Miuccia created headbands with a regal, exaggerated stature. They sold out almost instantly, but Etsy has an amazing selection of vintage and handcrafted bands.

6. Pleated Skirts

Pleated skirts were popular at fashion month in February, and at the time there has been a 60% increase in Google searches for pleated skirts year on year. These trending skirts fall just above the ankle and have a super-defined pleat.

7. Pearl Jewellery

Pearl jewellery has become the easiest way to give your look at 2019 refresh—whether with a pearl hair slide, a pendant with a chunky pearl or hoop earrings with a drop pearl. This street style trend is already having a big impact on the high street, as you'll find them at Mango, H&M, ASOS and more.

8. Strappy Sandals

Whether you call them floss heels, naked heels, strappy heels, this is arguably the leading sandal trend of the year. The Row started the return of the skimpy stiletto, and now every brand we can think of has its own version of barely there sandals.

9. Floral Dresses

Floral dresses aren't a groundbreaking addition to this list, however, printed midi dresses remain a street style staple.
