If we asked you what the year's biggest day for shopping sales is, what would your answer be? Boxing Day? Black Friday? Cyber Monday? Well, you'd be wrong on all accounts. The most popular day for shopping sales is Singles Day. If you're looking at your screen with confusion, don't worry, you're not alone. Allow us to explain the phenomenon, that we guarantee is about to get big in the UK.
Singles Day is held every November 11 in China and was originally launched in a bid to help single Chinese people celebrate that status. As part of this tradition, which apparently started in 1993, shops and online retailers offer up incredible discounts, with the idea being that you treat yourself on singles day. Fun fact: 2011's event was called 'Singles Day of the Century'.
Massive online retailers such as Taobao and Alibaba have cashed in on the day with their sales growing year on year. In fact, this year after 15 hours into the event, reported that they'd shifted £10bn worth of goods.
While we haven't seen the market take off quite so much in the UK for Singles Day, as the US' Black Friday and Cyber Monday have, we're always hoping to bring your news of places to shop incredible discounts.
