I'm Genuinely Surprised That This Is 2020's First It bag

As the S/S 20 season takes shape and we all start investing in new trends, the fashion crowd seems to be leaning towards pieces that will look timeless and stay in our wardrobes for years to come. So who knew that the year’s first It bag was going to be something so unusual? The tote in question is an oversized egg-shaped pearl bag from Simone Rocha.

Across some of the major online retailers that stock the bag—Net-a-Porter, Moda Operandi, Farfetch and Browns Fashion—it's only Net-a-Porter that still has the bag available to buy, that’s how popular it is. Net-a-Porter told me that it has sold nearly 30% of the pieces it has and has increased the stock by 300% more than other Simone Rocha bags; clearly it’s a popular choice. When I asked the retailer why this bag was such a hit, it revealed some interesting information. Over the past six months, the luxury retailer has seen an increase for customers looking for bags that feel like art. Adding to that, the bag is clearly a showstopper aesthetically speaking, and while it’s not inexpensive, it’s still more affordable than similar bags in the market.

As for the Who What Wear team, we were divided on whether or not we’d invest. While all admitted it was a beautiful piece, half of us weren’t convinced of its practicality. Although it can only be worn on the wrist, it’s big enough to carry a decent number of essentials—your phone, cards, money, and a few bits of makeup. As one editor put it—it’s ideal for a bride.
