When Vogue declared earlier this year that kitten heels were back, it sparked an outcry (seriously) on social media, with one of our own readers even claiming she would rather have a toenail infection than wear a pair. Quite the statement. Yet these aren't the only divisive shoes that made a return in 2017—cowboy boots, flatforms and white shoes also generated some eyebrow-raising debate among even the most stylish of friends this year. But didn't stop them from being everywhere on the street style circuit, as we couldn't get away from the aforementioned footwear trends. Happily, there were also crowd-pleasers, like ballet pumps adorned with ribbons and postbox-red shoes in every style imaginable that were also popular this year. Spoiler: They'll all probably be around for a while in 2018 too, so it's worth shopping them yet.
Scroll below to shop the eight shoe trends we saw everywhere in 2017.
1. Cowboy boots
2. Kitten Heels
When we brought you the news that kitten heels were back, many readers were outraged. For the last 10 years, these heels have been firmly in fashion's Room 101, but thanks to Dior, The Row and many more reputable names, the kitten heel (and particularly in slingback form) is back, and it's here to stay.
3. Silver Boots
Style du Monde
At London Fashion Week in September 2016, we kept seeing a pair of £65 mirrored Topshop boots (as worn by Lucy Williams above). The silver boot trend was kick-started by Balenciaga, but in 2017 were also all over the high street.
4. White Shoes
Flatform shoes are almost as divisive as kitten heels, but we saw them everywhere this summer, thanks to the likes of Gucci, Prada and Stella McCartney making them a catwalk essential. Also, there's no denying they are comfortable. See our rundown of how to wear them now.
Just like our jumpers—which suddenly all had ties and bows on the cuffs—ribbons adorned our shoes, whether lace-up ballerinas, grosgrain-fastened ankle boots or ankle-tied stilettos.
7. Ballet Pumps
In the mid-noughties, thanks to Kate Moss, we all owned a pair of ballet pumps, but they made a triumphant return this year. The coolest ballerina shoes now have heaps of personality, with ribbons, sequins, glitter, buckles, feathers and embellishment. You can see our edit of the best of the bunch here.
8. Red shoes
Earlier this year, we brought you the news that primary red is the one colour that is flattering on everyone—which is a good thing given that it was a key shade for handbags and shoes throughout the whole of 2017. A pair of red shoes can instantly lift an outfit, and Martha Ward's red suede ballet pumps from & Other Stories above, for example, sold out in a flash.
