For Yet Another Summer, This Trend Is Going to Reign Supreme
Dare we call it that the ruffles trend is to transcend its in-vogue status to become a wardrobe staple? It’s definitely edging that way—and if your wardrobe now boasts more frilly cuffs and collars than minimalist details, perhaps you already know what the answer is.
We love ruffles because they have the power to lift the simplest of pieces, thus transforming the plainest of outfits. Whether it’s a little frill down a trouser leg or an unexpectedly flouncy collar popping up out of a sweater, ruffles are whimsy yet hardworking. (And when you need something to take you from your desk to an evening out, they’re just the right call.)
There are a handful of designers (such as Caroline Constas and Cecilie Bahnsen) who have made ruffles a signature style and brilliantly continue to reinvent them every season. But if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, you can still shop some affordable options from the high street. Check out the gallery below for our favourite ruffles of the moment.
A ruffled, flower-print wrap dress might have positively prim connotations, but not when styled with chunky white trainers and gold hoops. This look is pure weekend goals.
We love Boden’s Breton tops, but its dresses are pretty lust-worthy this season too.
The simplest of details can make the biggest of differences, so embrace wardrobe classics with a twist. Make like blogger Darja Barannik and juxtapose a feminine top with something harder-edged, like this straight-cut skirt.
Alexa Chung clearly has a love for with all things frilly this spring.
Isabel Marant is also a chief champion of ruffles.
A simple tee gets an Insta-worthy upgrade when loaded with ruffles. It’s all you need to upgrade a pair of jeans.
A ruffle hem creates a dramatic silhouette.
Drawn to a ruffled skirt but unsure of what shoes to pair with it? A pair of knee-high boots is perfect for transitioning through the seasons.
We’ve fallen for the crinkly material on this Marques’Almeida design.
Wear with a fancy blouse for a wedding and then with a plain white tee for Saturday brunch.
Ruffled trousers are perhaps the most daunting purchase to make, but fear not. Experiment with different styles (ruffles down the leg, along the hem etc.), and you’re bound to find a pair that works for you.
A fluted hem flatters all physiques. Period.
Our trouser dreams are made of these.
Next up, do you own a rainbow dress? One look at this one and you’ll certainly be tempted.
