My neighbour is a life coach, and recently we were catching up after walking our dogs. When I ducked into my wardrobe to grab a jacket, he took a hard look at my liberal approach to organisation: leather and denim stacked haphazardly, an odd kimono strewn with arms akimbo on a pile of washing, shoes everywhere. Aghast, he asked, “Is it always like this?” To my naive “Like what?” retort, he offered, “Oh honey, this is a root chakra problem.”
Could one’s personal space subconsciously influence your mood? I consulted reiki master (and my sister) Jenni Finley to catch up on all things root chakra related. As an energy healer, she emphasised the power of setting subconscious cues throughout a room as reminders of how to feel and think.
“Every time you look around a space, you get subconscious messages,” she explained. Everything on the planet needs to be replenished and cleared in some way. The ocean is continually withdrawing and reshaping itself. All things in nature reach an apex, experience birth, death, and renewal. That’s the way energy is. Sometimes it needs to be cleared and released.” Keep scrolling for her must-haves for generating positive energy and creating a sacred space within the home.
Establish a daily or nightly routine to call in positive energy. “Any ritual you create is valuable; it can be as simple as lighting a candle. Sandalwood is a sacred tree, the oil of which vibrates to the first and fourth chakras. It is extremely grounding and generates openness and healing to the heart space.”
“Creating a sacred space is as simple as declaring that a certain area has meaning,” Finley said. If you have a daily meditation practice, meditate in the same spot each day. “With an established routine, you’ll come to associate the area itself with feelings of peace and well-being.”
“The heart chakra is like the engine of the car. If you want a quick result, get some rose quartz,” said Finley. Crystals are known for holding and magnifying certain vibrations. “The simplest way to program a crystal is to sage it first, then sit in meditation and generate the feeling or the thought that you want the crystal to hold. Hold onto the stone and feel what you want to feel. The crystal will retain the vibration.”
Sage has a cleansing effect on negative vibes. Think of it as hitting the rest button. “If you are experiencing a persistent emotion that won’t clear, something effective would be to sage your personal space, sage yourself, and then sage your stones.”
Finley suggests layering your room with subconscious cues to trigger happy, positive thoughts, including a personal totem or power animal: “A power animal is a spiritual companion. They work well with reiki and shamanic healing, offering unique insights and gifts to the spiritual journey.”
“This is one of my favorite books. It is an incredible work of fiction that is wildly accurate on energy healing,” said Finley. To quote Coelho, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
“I like all the elements to be represented surrounding meditation,” said Finley. Incense is thought to naturally lift the spirits and raise positive vibrations. The burning of incense often accompanies prayers and invocation. Choose a scent specific to your meditation goal. If you’re looking to attract more positive things into your life, opt for patchouli. Fragrant lavender and rose are great for stress relief.
“Feathers are representative of accentuation and the connection to the divine,” said Finley. Try peppering in some feather-themed décor for an added daily boost.
“Sage, salt water or running water, moonlight, sunlight, and Thieves oil are all valuable for clearing,” said Finley. Naturally antiviral and antibacterial, Thieves oil is great to have on hand when you are feeling overworked or stressed. “Run a few drops on the bottom of your feet if you feel rundown; it will knock out any germs and reduce stress.”
A mystical tree indigenous to South America, palo santo means “holy wood” in Spanish. “Palo santo is energy clearing, it generates the third-eye awakening, and it is a sacred tree,” said Finley. Plus, it smells fantastic and keeps mosquitos away. To light, hold the stick at a 45-degree angle toward the flame. Once the tip ignites, let it burn around 30 seconds to one minute, and then blow it out. Place it in a fireproof bowl and enjoy the healing aroma.
