Although you probably already associate the City of Light with fashion—after all, it’s home to major design houses like Chanel and Dior—Paris’s mayor, Anne Hidalgo, announced this morning that she’ll be working to step up the city’s fashion game even further. “Fashion is one of Paris’s best attributes,” she told WWD. “But there was a sort of distance that had appeared between the public/political institutions and the fashion world. … Saying that Paris is the capital of fashion is not enough. … It’s about putting City Hall and the institutions of Paris at the service of creativity and amplifying the importance of Paris Fashion Week.”
So what will that look like? Well, pretty amazing! Just in time for fashion week in September, the Eiffel Tower will be lit up with the words “La Mode Aime Paris” or “Fashion Loves Paris”; a similar poster campaign will be displayed in the city’s restaurants and stores; giant outdoor screens will display runway shows as they happen across the city; and up to €60 million, about $66 million, will be invested in Paris’s fashion schools and institutions. And the cherry on top? Hidalgo says they’re also working on initiatives to provide a warmer welcome to the out-of-town fashion flock that descends on the city every season. We may be a little biased, but we think the plan is both commendable and super exciting.
