The 6 Coats We Recommend Trying Oversized This Season

As we said in our autumn/winter 2019 trend report, when it comes to coats this year, go big or go home. At the time, we spoke to Elizabeth von der Goltz, Net-a-Porter's global buying director, who told us about the coat trends across the runways stating that "for the most part, it was the bigger the better; oversized shapes, duvet dressing, blanket capes and more."

What music to our ears. We love oversized coats—especially when it's below freezing and we have to scuddle to work in the dark. Duvet coat? Yes, please. Blanket coat? Absolutely. Enough space to actually layer up? Thank you! So which coat styles should are people actually wearing oversized this season? Let's investigate.

While technically you can oversize any coat but sizing up a bit, there are certain styles we are already seeing trending over others. While puffers and capes were predicted to gain popularity, there are more classic styles (like the trench and checked coat) that we're seeing getting the oversized treatment the most. Keep scrolling to discover the five ways we recommend trying the oversized-coat trend this season and shop the best ones.

1. The Oversized Trench

According to Elizabeth von der Goltz, we cannot talk about the oversized coat trend without talking about the JW Anderson trench coat. It became an instant classic when it went down the runway last spring and brings a new spin to a classic.

Is there anything more divine than feeling warm all the way down to your ankles? This is one of those investment pieces you will thank yourself for buying every year when you pull it out of the wardrobe. This is a great piece to look for secondhand, even in the men's section because the fit can be so generous. Why not try it in a fabulous neon if you're looking to shake things up this year?

3. The Oversized Shearling Coat

We highly recommend an oversized 1970s shearling coat because not only does it just look so warm and toasty, but it's just so chic. Whether you go for a cropped teddy (which is  French girl–approved by cool girls like Jeanne Damas and Leia Fez) or a more classic suede one, they work year after year. This Mango one is already trending, but this is something you can absolutely find vintage

We go on and on about our love of camel coats each winter, but for 2019, we feel especially passionate about them. Why? Because it's the year of beige. We're looking forward to trying an oversized camel coat in monochromatic beige styling.

5. The Oversized Checked Coat

Checked coats are reliably classic while also keeping things interesting. They're a street style favourite and work especially well with warm leather accents. Simply pop on a roll-neck jumper, jeans and boots and your look is done. This ASOS one is selling fast because it is such a forever love kind of piece.
