This Stylist Invented a 27-Piece Formula for an Expensive-Looking Wardrobe

Two of the most popular fashion topics at Who What Wear are looking expensive and creating a capsule wardrobe. Fashion stylist Charlotte Warburton has combined these and invented a formula for having all the essentials in your wardrobe. With her styling consultation TBC (To Be Created), she strips back people’s wardrobes and reveals the basics that have the biggest impact. Whether you have a Zara or Prada budget, she believes there are certain items every woman should own—and says you can find quality versions at any price point. “Wearing a white shirt and blue jeans may not be the most cutting edge look but it’s foolproof,” she explains.

So what’s the secret to finding expensive-looking basics on the high street? “Look for a good cut, quality fabric and clean finishings,” she explains. “Also I always say just because it’s styled well online, in person it can be completely different, so don’t be fooled. It's worth venturing into stores to check the quality in real life so you make sure they are pieces that will actually last you and become the cornerstones of your wardrobe.” As for where to find the best basics on the high street, she says the answer varies and has a lot to do with your shape.

“Zara does the best blazers with a great flattering shoulder structure for all body shapes,” she explains. “Arket has the best knitwear and their oversized roll-necks look far more expensive than they are thanks to their lux looking cut. I have hunted high and low—even in price point—for the ultimate oversized white shirt, and & Other Stories have the dream one. It’s the right level of oversized, and its finishings won’t swamp you.”

Charlotte has created a list of the 27 items you need in your wardrobe. “[It’s been] a development and research process, but I feel with the exception of two trend pieces that change per month, the rest are timeless,” she says. “You could use this season’s bodysuit under a blazer instead of a white shirt and team with impeccably tailored wide-leg trousers to add a new dressing dimension, for instance. The accessory that will rev up your look this season is a pair of biker boots, and if you team these with an oversized hoodie and leather trousers, there’s nothing boring about that! Introducing a new accessory will always liven up any capsule.”
