9 Noteworthy Street Style Trends Coming Out of Milan Right Now

With two of the four fashion weeks under our belts, it's finally time for Milan Fashion Week. At each stop on the mammoth journey, the four cities offer up a unique feel. New York kicked off with a cacophony of colour, whilst London showcased the very best of pleats and prints. But the Italian city demands an elevated style that's reflective of the luxury brands that have come out of it. Think heritage brands like Gucci and Prada alongside modern (but still elegant) counterparts like Bottega Veneta.

As the fashion crowd swarmed the city, darting from show to show, we took in the outfits of the fashionable attendees. In due course, we'll come to the important trends that appeared on the Milanese runways, but for now, here are the nine street style trends that stood out at Milan Fashion Week.

1. LEATHER BLAZERS

Once again, we're reminded of just how chic and wearable leather blazers are. Paired with skirts, classic tailoring or even denim styles, there are plenty of ways to style a leather blazer, and with autumn on the approach, it's the right time to invest.

Oversized fits were most popular at Milan Fashion Week.

2. BUSTIERS

In yet another Y2K throwback, the fashion crowd has embraced the bustier top. Though fitted styles have been championed by brands like Miaou and Reformation with added strap details, the original cold-shoulder premise is back in fashion. For cooler days, shrug on a jacket.

The tight-fitting bustier works so well with loose trousers.

3. TULLE

Every time fashion week takes Milan, a touch of drama is added to the city's style. As if in preparation for our final stop in the birth place of couture, Paris, there's an added flair to the looks served in Milan. Case in point: sequins, embellishments and swathes of fabric.

If you're going for bold, bright pink is a good choice.

4. YELLOW

Every season, certain colours are promoted in their relevance in the fashion scene. We first saw yellow taking centre stage at New York Fashion Week, and it's clear that there's no stopping this sunny shade. Whether you prefer a mustard or a bright yellow, there's a shade for everyone on the yellow colour wheel.

5. METALLIC ACCESSORIES

One thing we've learnt from our street style friends is that metallics aren't just for evening. Silver and gold accessories glinted through Milan's streets, and as an eternally chic way to accessorize, we've been convinced to invest.

6. LONG SKIRTS

It was only a matter of time before hemlines dropped, and the fashion set has proven that the maxi is back in business. Denim iterations work particularly well with boots, whilst sheer inserts can create the illusion of length and show a little leg.

7. SLICK TAILORING

Let's be honest. It wouldn't be fashion week without brilliant tailoring. Each city has served up chic tailored looks, but it was Milan that gave the masterclass in fashion-forward suiting. Whether you prefer classic tailoring or a more relaxed take, suiting is here to stay.

For the last few seasons, mini accessories have reigned supreme, from micro bags to tiny sunglasses. For autumn, bigger is back to being better, so grab your oversized sunnies for bright autumn days.

9. SHEARLING BAGS

It's rare to spot a bag trend that isn't leather. Shapes, straps and design are the normal point of reference for a new It style. But as cosy season begins, soft textiles have made their way from jumpers to coats and now handbags.
