This morning Kensington Palace announced the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and this afternoon they smiled for cameras during an engagement photo-call in the Sunken Garden in Kensington Palace. The Duchess of Cambridge famously caused a shopping frenzy with the navy blue Issa wrap dress she wore to her engagement announcement, and Meghan's outfit is set to cause a similar shopping spike. Meghan wore a dark green dress by Parosh with an ivory belted knee-length coat over the top by Canadian label The Line—a nod to her hometown of Toronto. We haven't wanted a white winter coat this much since Jennifer Lopez wore her white D&G coat.
The Line the Label website crashed within 15 minutes of the appearance, proving that the Meghan effect is going to be a powerful force. She followed Kate's lead and wore a pair of nude pumps with crisscross straps across the ankle by Aquazzura and earrings by another Canadian brand, Birks. It's an outfit that is in keeping with Meghan's classic, polished style—she has explained before that she favours simple designs and avoids prints.
As for her engagement ring, it is a gold diamond ring that Harry designed with the jewellers Cleave and Company using a diamond from Botswana and diamonds from Princess Diana's personal collection. Keep scrolling to see Meghan's engagement outfit and to shop similar coats.
