It's no secret that we here at Who What Wear are enamoured with the personal styles of Meghan Markle and Anna Wintour. Whether the Duchess of Sussex is photographed while touring Morocco or the editor-in-chief of Vogue is snapped while walking the streets at fashion week, we're quick to take style notes whenever these fashion icons step out in front of the cameras.

While it goes without saying that Markle and Wintour each have their own distinct styles, we've noticed a few key pieces that are essentials in both their wardrobes. First, there are the trench coats, the timeless outerwear staples which are, arguably, the hardest-working pieces in both of these sartorially savvy women's respective wardrobes. Then, there are the sunglasses, aka the trademark accessory of the Vogue editor-in-chief that the duchess just so happens to be rather fond of too.

Want to know which other wardrobe basics Markle and Wintour swear by and how they style them? Keep scrolling to find out and shop the essentials these style icons wear on repeat.

1. Classic Trench Coats

When it comes to outerwear, both Markle and Wintour have been known to reach for a timeless wardrobe basic: A classic trench coat. The versatile staple is the perfect lightweight layering piece for transitional seasons, as the style icons demonstrate below.

Or, do as Wintour does here and cinch the waist if the weather isn't as forgiving.

2. Nude Pointed-Toe Pumps

If we've learned anything from style stalking Markle and Wintour, it's that a pair of nude pumps is a basic worth investing in. The duchess wears them so frequently that we've deemed them her favourite shoes, and, although the Vogue editor-in-chief frequently steps out in her signature strappy sandals, neutral pumps are clearly a staple in her shoe closet as well.

Follow Wintour's lead and pair nude pumps with bold prints.

3. Midi Dresses

The modest hemline is a favourite of both Markle and Wintour. Whether they're attending a wedding or stepping out for fashion week, the duchess and the Vogue editor-in-chief have been known to don a midi dress for nearly every occasion.

An otherwise casual midi dress can easily be dressed up with a pair of pointed-toe pumps and a clutch, as the duchess demonstrates here.

On the other hand, a boldly printed midi dress needs little embellishment. Heed Wintour's example here and keep accessories to a minimum.

4. Tights

This "boring" basic lends an enormous amount of polish to any look, as evidenced by Markle and Wintour's looks below. If anyone can make a compelling case for this often overlooked wardrobe staple, it's the impossibly chic duchess and the always impeccably dressed Vogue editor-in-chief.

However, opaque tights can also make an outfit look that much more put-together too.

5. Oversized Sunglasses

Sunglasses are a staple that both Markle and Wintour wear on repeat. Of course, Wintour is rarely seen without her trademark oversized eyewear, and diehard duchess fans will recall that Markle first sent the fashion world into a frenzy in 2017 when she donned a pair of £143 sunglasses (then again when she wore a £56 pair at her bridal shower).
