If you asked any fashion person what designer they’d choose if they could only wear one brand all summer, I think I know what they’d say. And no, it’s not something flashy like Valentino or Chanel—I’m thinking the answer would be a little more low-key.

After all, Matteau is the independent Australian brand so many editors, influencers and celebrities are straight-up obsessed with right now. So much so that it’s difficult to scroll through my fashionable Insta feed at any given time without coming across the brand’s signature pieces. Not that you’d even realise it. Matteau’s appeal is in its understated luxury. Starting off as a minimalist swimwear brand known for simple square necklines and strappy bikinis, the collection is now full of beautiful, easy-to-wear dresses and chic separates characterised by a mix of floaty fabrics, muted colour tones and pretty ruching. And since the sun has come out, it’s all I want to wear (and I know I’m not alone).

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a white Matteau dress poolside on holiday.

You may already be familiar with the brand thanks to that cult silk shirt that stole the hearts of so many of us last summer and that’s back again in a number of different prints this year too. But it’s Matteau’s focus on creating timeless and versatile pieces that last way beyond one season that has me thinking this is a brand we’ll be talking about for many years to come.

The airy dresses are perfect for styling not only alongside bare feet on the sand but also on hot days in the city—the key to a true summer wardrobe hero. And although most of the pieces are simple enough to throw on for casual occasions, they also feel special in their design, whether that’s thanks to a billowy silhouette, intricate stitching or dainty florals. This means they can also be dressed up for dinner dates and even weddings with the easy addition of strappy heels.

Seriously, even Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has fallen under Matteau’s minimalist spell. The queen of polished dressing wore one of the brand’s white dresses and a delicious chocolate-brown co-ord on her most recent holiday and looked positively chic.
