6 Autumn Trends Marks and Spencer Is Already Backing in a Big Way
It's no secret that Marks and Spencer is a reliable source of frugal wardrobe foundations. Its range of cotton underwear, basic tees and sturdy denim are all impressively high quality for the price, and have become something of a national treasure among us UK shoppers.
But you might be guilty of overlooking the selection of trend-led items in your local M&S. For the past few seasons, this high-street underdog has had its finger on the pulse, delivering directional pieces that could easily be mistaken for more expensive brands. In the last few weeks alone, we've highlighted the standout transitional dresses, leather slingbacks and premium-looking linen separates. But as we head toward autumn, we're turning our attention to six new trends that M&S is backing big-time.
If you've consulted our in-depth AW23 trend report, you're probably already familiar with a few of these—and are no doubt excited that you can try them for yourself without splurging. From the punchy hue that's already made its mark to the minimalist-friendly aesthetic we can't stop talking about, scroll on to see and shop the highlights of Marks & Spencer's latest collection.
1. Quiet-Luxury Staples
You can't beat Marks and Spencer cashmere on a chilly autumn day.
This might just be the perfect trench coat—and it looks so much more expensive than it is.
The time has come to start thinking about your go-to knits for autumn/winter. I adore this soft lime shade.
2. Business Class
While pinstripes are typically formal, this blazer is easy to dress down with jeans and a T-shirt.
I can't believe this premium-looking outfit is entirely from M&S.
Waistcoats are a huge trend for AW23, and this one is a winner.
3. Shirt Tales
You'll be glad you invested in simple shirting like this when putting together your autumn looks.
Don't think you have to stick to moody hues once the temperature drops—this bright tangerine will give you a boost on cloudy days.
4. Check Mate
I'd style this with a black slip skirt and slingbacks to give it an evening spin.
An easy piece to chuck on with jeans when you don't know what to wear.
Available in petite, regular and long lengths.
I predict tweed jackets will be everywhere as we move into autumn.
5. La Vie En Rose
The perfect throw-on piece for those cooler evenings.
I want this knit in every colour, please. (It comes in three others.)
6. Power Platforms
These incredible Mary Janes are also available in patent black.
Admittedly, it's a little too early to start thinking about party season, but I'm convinced I'll find an earlier occasion to wear these to.

Bébhinn Campbell is an Edinburgh-based fashion and lifestyle writer. After receiving an Audrey Hepburn box set for her 10th birthday and subsequently swooning over the actor’s wardrobe, Bébhinn felt pretty confident she wanted a career that involved clothes. She started her first blog at age 14—the title was a pun, but we’ll leave it at that—and went on to intern at print and digital publications in Berlin and London, including Dazed & Confused and Indie magazine.
A job at a fashion startup took Bébhinn from Ireland to Scotland in 2019, where she now works as a freelance journalist and copywriter covering everything from travel and interiors to styling advice. As a contributor for Who What Wear, Bébhinn always keeps her eyes peeled for emerging trends and looks worth writing about. She prides herself on her ability to cut through the noise and identify solid investment buys, exciting new brands and updated takes on classic designs.
While she still loves Audrey Hepburn films, these days, Bébhinn’s sartorial taste sits closer to Annie Hall’s and Alexa Chung’s. In her spare time, she’s likely cooing over cute dogs on rescue websites, playing folk songs on her guitar and browsing bookshops for new additions to her already-overpacked shelves.
