This New Autumn Trend Is Slowly Killing Off Biker Jackets

When was the last time you saw a trendsetting celeb or influencer in a biker jacket? I only ask because I have a feeling this staple item is enjoying a little time out of the spotlight. It would appear that another leather cover-up is all the rage in fashion circles right now. Bikers and motos shall be resurrected in due course, I'm sure (you know such classic items never really die), but for autumn 2019, the leather blazer is reigning supreme.

Over the past week, I've seen these throwback leather blazer jackets all over—from my commute to the streets of Milan Fashion Week to across the pond on L.A.'s celebrity set. It would appear that the item has been lifted from the old closets of Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow (two prolific leather-blazer wearers from the '90s) and into new ensembles. You'll find them partnered to minidresses and knee-high boots, worn oversized with baggy trousers and even in full-leather head-to-toe looks. Well, we did give you a heads up on the latter being a key look for A/W 19.

Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber are staunch supporters, but the trend translates across age groups and personal style tribes. Elle MacPherson looked cooler than cool wearing one to the airport with tailored wide-leg trousers. One of our favourite Insta girls, Sylvie Mus, has been wearing hers all summer with super-minimal dresses or jeans-and-tee combinations underneath. All have one thing in common: The leather jackets in question are not snug, as it's all about a slightly looser fit for this season.

Keep scrolling to see who's wearing the leather blazer trend (and what they're wearing them with), and then shop from some of my top picks below.

Style Notes: Just as good on nights out as they are in the day, Bella Hadid hasn't taken her black leather blazer from Magda Butrym off recently.

Style Notes: An oversized jacket instantly makes a fancy dress look more casual.

Style Notes: Bella Hadid wore this full chocolate-brown leather look in NYC earlier in the year and has clearly been committed ever since.

Style Notes: Kendall Jenner has branched out with a snake-print iteration of the trend from Nili Lotan—very wisely worn with a plain outfit for max impact.

Style Notes: This longer style does lend itself better to short skirts and dresses than a biker.

Style Notes: Hailey Bieber's pairing of white boots and a leather jacket is about as '90s as it gets.

Style Notes: The more oversized the better, as proven by Chloé's giant jacket–and–wide strides formula here.
