Katie Holmes Just Made These "Dated" French Shoes Look So Good With Jeans

Up there with kitten heels and crocs, espadrille wedges are known to evoke a Marmite reaction. Perhaps it's the natural-fibre wedge, or the unshakeable "boho" association that has ebbed from popularity, that has tarnished the appeal of the style for you. But, if anyone can freshen up this overlooked shoe style in an unexpected way, it has to be Katie Holmes.

Favouring wedges over heels in recent months, the actress and style icon has embraced a very French way of wearing the ever-so-slightly maligned shoe. It's true that espadrilles can consider Spain as their birthplace, but they have become part of the French fashion lexicon over the decades, with many of the most classic dressers on our radar in Paris and beyond relying upon them every time summer comes calling.

On a walk in New York, Holmes styled her open-toe wedges with a raffia bucket bag and dark-wash flared jeans, for a 2023 take on a relaxed, boho-inspired ensemble. Her well-coordinated accessories polished the low-maintenance outfit, with her T-shirt neatly tucked into a brown leather belt, set off with face-framing cat-eye sunglasses.

Known to enjoy experimenting with Y2K fashion, perhaps it's no surprise that Holmes has reached for a pair of espadrille wedges to compliment her summer outfit. Love them or hate them, they're undeniably comfortable and never really go out of style.
