I'm not one to follow the herd, but there's something about this one young French brand that has me—and everyone else I know—hooked. The team here has already expressed adoration for the skills of French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus and took some time to showcase the many pieces that his street style following has invested in over the past year or so. However, a new creation of his is so omnipresent that I believe we are experiencing peak Jacquemus. Something I'm happy to live through—here's why…
With more than a whiff of the 1980s, the brand's black-and-white polka-dot blouse is washing my Instagram feed with look-at-me spots. While this perennial summer print has already filtered down to many corners of the retail world, it's the pronounced shoulder pads, extra drapery and shiny silver buttons that set this one apart from the crowd.
Moving on from last summer's obsession with statement ruffled sleeves and blue stripes, the most directional girls are now opting for volume and dots combined, using this particular—highly recognisable—piece with everything from mom jeans to flirty miniskirts.
You may have noticed (as seen on Jeanne Damas) another, softer version from the label also exists in this print—which goes some way to explaining how the Jacquemus polka parade has been growing exponentially.
We've seen this piece travelling around the globe: being packed up and taken to hot-weather destinations as often as it's being chosen for Parisian nights out. And therein lies the joy of this random smash hit—it actually works with a host of occasions and outfits.
The vintage-inspired blouse is on my mind, saved onto Instagram and definitely featuring in my Net-a-Porter wish list; now all I need to do is click "buy."
