In the most head-scratching news to emerge yet today, the Internet is abuzz with the fact that Instagram very recently banned the hashtag #curvy. If you try to hashtag your photo #curvy, you get an error page simply stating, "Sorry, that page isn't available."
What in the world?! Why would Instagram want to ban a seemingly innocuous hashtag like #curvy, especially when it could serve to empower women (like plus-size model Ashley Graham, shown above, who has used the hashtag before). A rep from Instagram told BuzzFeed that the platform made the decision to ban the term because "it was being used to share images and videos that violated Instagram's community guidelines around nudity."
The worst part? While the hashtag #curvy has been banned, terms like #skinny, #thin, and even hateful ones like #fatty still remain (hat tip to PopSugar for pointing this fact out). To us, it seems more than a bit misguided for the social media platform to take a stance against posting nude photos but not take a stance against posting body-shaming imagery.
