Amal Just Joined a Long and Iconic List of Celebrities in Yellow Dresses

I'm going to make a bold claim: The Little Yellow Dress could well be as iconic as the LBD. That's not to say the black dress doesn't have its place in fashion history (hello, it was Coco Chanel who invented it), but the yellow variety has really made some strides over the years—and when you look at the star of Meghan and Harry's royal wedding (outside of the new Duchess of Sussex in her custom Givenchy Haute Couture gown, of course) it was Amal Clooney is a stunning canary-yellow bespoke dress from Stella McCartney.

Before that moment, there were many others, starting with Elizabeth Taylor's wedding dress, which she wore to marry Richard Burton in 1964. How about the fact that Kate Moss's chiffon pastel frock from 2003 was so popular she re-created it for her 2014 Topshop collection? More recently, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Emma Stone have showed us just how impactful a yellow dress can be. Oh, and it's a massive trend for S/S 18.

Style Notes: From the elongated pencil skirt silhouette to the draped knot detail at the back, this dress oozed Old Hollywood glamour but felt entirely modern thanks to its egg yolk–yellow fabric. Bravo, Stella McCartney.

Style Notes: This chiffon dress made plenty of women swoon. Why? It was an accessible look but was still classic Moss (the shrugged-off shoulder and messy hair add the rock 'n' roll chic).

Style Notes: Elizabeth Taylor declined a white wedding dress for her nuptials to Richard Burton and opted for a yellow empire-line frock. Despite their legendary passionate romance, this was a serene look for the star.

Michelle Williams

Style Notes: At the 2006 Oscars, Michelle Williams (up for supporting actress for her role in Brokeback Mountain), wore this bold Vera Wang gown. It was set off perfectly with the red lip. We think about this look a lot.

Style Notes: The 2014 Grammy Awards saw Rihanna wearing this yellow dress, aka the sassiest shirtdress you've ever seen.

Style Notes: Round two for Rihanna's love of the yellow dress came in 2015 when she wore the best dress of the evening in a couture gown by Chinese designer Guo Pei.

Princess Diana

Style Notes: Wearing what has to be the most princess-y dress of all princess dresses, this taffeta ballgown from 1983 is still a winner in our eyes.

Style Notes: This silky little tea dress from Jenny Packham was a big hit for Kate Middleton in 2011 when her and William were touring Canada.

Style Notes: You didn't think we'd have a gallery of yellow dresses without mentioning this epic Roberto Cavalli creation, did you? Worn by Beyoncé for the Hold Up video from her Lemonade album, it was simultaneously fierce and feminine.

Style Notes: If you loved early '00s movies, then we guarantee you loved this dress as seen on Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Emma Stone

Style Notes: The La La Land yellow dress effect was definitely a thing in 2017. And it will continue well into 2018 thanks to it being one of the biggest dress trends of the year.

Style Notes: Around the same time as Stone's on-screen character wearing yellow, the actress also adopted it for her red carpet appearances. This Gucci floral dress was a key catwalk look from 2017.

Solange Knowles

Style Notes: You can always rely on Solange Knowles to take a trend to its extreme, and here she was at the Met Gala in 2016 wearing a pleated extravaganza from David Laport.

Emma Watson

Style Notes: Belle's dress from Beauty and the Beast was so gorgeous in the original Disney film, we couldn't believe how incredible it looked on Emma Watson in the live-action version.

Alicia Silverstone

Style Notes: Okay, it's not quite a dress, but it's still yellow and it's still iconic.

Gigi Hadid

Style Notes: Erring slightly towards the tangerine side of the spectrum, this knicker-flashing number from Emilia Wickstead will always have a spot in Gigi Hadid's list of best looks.
