The Once "Naff" Trend the Blogging Set Is Really Into Right Now

We're the first to admit that patent leather trench coats and vinyl trousers sound rather terrifying on paper, but nonetheless, such shiny items are proving to be one of the biggest trends of the year so far, worn by almost every trusted blogger we can think of. This squeaky-clean idea was sparked first by Alexa Chung back in September, thanks to a patent leather trench coat that was the standout hit of her second collection for M&S.

The piece was adopted fast by the likes of Pandora Sykes, Lucy Williams and Megan Ellaby, but that is only one of the many, many vinyl-finished pieces we spot on our daily (well, hourly) Instagram scroll. Mango’s £36 patent miniskirt has been a best seller, while Topshop's newly released vinyl trousers are already proving a hit.

Style Notes: Lucy Williams pairs her Alexa Chung for Marks & and Spencer patent vinyl trench coat with a simple grey jumper and ripped-hem jeans, making this a wearable everyday outfit.

Style Notes: Pandora Sykes's patent leather coat by Charlotte Simone is extra cosy thanks to the fluffy collar. She mixes it with a rainbow-striped cashmere jumper by Madeleine Thompson.

Style Notes: Camille Charrière shows you can wear the look head to toe, styling a patent leather skirt suit with ankle boots with patent toes.

Style Notes: Natasha Ndlovu made her vinyl trousers the focal point of her outfit by pairing them with a simple white ribbed knit and heeled black sandals.

Style Notes: Megan Ellaby proved that a patent leather trench coat can make a casual outfit, pairing it with Converse, boyfriend jeans and a grey cashmere scarf.

Style Notes: Courtney from Always Judging opted for a more relaxed bomber-style patent leather jacket by Frame—a current update on the classic leather jacket.

Style Notes: For when it gets warmer, follow Lucy Williams's lead and wear a patent leather miniskirt with a T-shirt, trainers and bare legs. Hers is just £36 from Mango.

Style Notes: If you're looking to make a statement, pair your vinyl trousers with matching patent ankle boots à la Camille.

Style Notes: Make your outfit all about the patent trench coat, belting it and wearing it with bare legs, like Giorgia Tordini in her Attico coat.
