How to Wear Your Favourite Summer Slip Dress Into Autumn

If you bought one trend-smashing piece this summer, it's highly likely that it was a '90s-style spaghetti strap slip dress. Correct? Thought so. The classically grunge-tinged Courtney Love–esque throw-on has undoubtedly been the silhouette of the year so far, but can you re-work it into your A/W 16 wardrobe? You bet. Wearing a slip dress throughout autumn and winter is entirely possible.

The key to wearing one in the latter stages of 2016 is all about playful layering—this trend isn't going anywhere just because the weather is about to take a nose dive, and there are outfits to prove it. But by layering we don't mean practical remember your coat darling: The street style set prove that if you are brave enough, slip dresses will work under and over pretty much anything, from jeans and a white shirt to your tracksuit bottoms. And as bloggers Lucy Williams and Shea Marie prove, it is the ultimate trans-seasonal piece for looking chic in that impossible-to-get-ready-for in-between weather.

For how to wear a slip dress in autumn see below for seven street style-ready tips…

1. When it comes to layering, play with proportions.

Style Notes: Slip dresses can be daunting thanks to their slinky nature, but Gilda Ambrosio shows that it pays to play with unexpected proportions. For a surprisingly wearable day look, try layering your slip over all manners of jumpers, from a neat cashmere to roomy sweatshirts.

When it comes to proportion play, look for slips with tie detailing at the straps like Gilda's to add extra drama.

This Topshop Boutique style comes with an in-built grey jumper ensuring a streamlined, no-fuss layered look.

2. Add a slip dress to your athleisure look.

Style Notes: We've seen people wearing their slip dresses over grey and white T-shirts all summer long, but Elle UK's Donna Wallace adds a different element to this outfit formula by wearing this with tracksuit pants and trainers. One of the few athleisure looks that doesn't feel overplayed—bravo.

The striped panels make this slip perfect for a sporty layered look.

For a sporty look, layer your slip over trousers with athletic stripes down each leg.

3. The slip can go under as well as over.

Style Notes: Slip dresses can look chic layered over your autumn knitwear, but they are also the perfect base on which to throw on your chunky knitwear. As Lucy Williams shows, when paired with bare legs and sandals, the oversize knit 'n' slip is the perfect trans-seasonal outfit.

You can't get much cosier than this roomy cashmere ribbed jumper layered over a silky slip.

4. Wear your bias-cut dress over your ankle-grazing jeans.

Style Notes: If you are looking to liven up the white shirt–and-jeans combo, a slip dress can work surprisingly well layered over the top. To make the ensemble work, opt for an ankle-grazing jean and a slip with a bit of give so the dress doesn't bump and stretch over the jeans.

The ruching on the side of this silk-satin slip makes it a more flattering fit that a straight up-and-down cut.

You don't just need to layer slips over classic white button-downs—embroidered shirts work well too!

Style Notes: If you are yet to invest in a '90s slip dress, but are ready to take the plunge for autumn, opt for a velvet version like Shea Marie who is wearing her orange one over at New York Fashion Week. The richer fabric makes this the perfect piece for placing over roll-necks and is a playful but comfortable day look. Add black opaques and biker boots when it becomes genuinely cold.

Style notes: Gigi Hadid shows that you don't have to wear a slip in a darker, richer hue in September, but can work your high summer slip into your winter wardrobe as long as you balance it with black 'wintery' accessories and a chunky jacket.

Make like Gigi, and layer a boxy shearling jacket over your slip.

7. Make the slip your party-season go-to.

Style Notes: It might be a little early to mention the words party dressing, but over at New York Fashion Week Alexa Chung shows how you can style a sexy slip in a low-key London way. Balance your slip (the shinier, the better) with a chunky day boot and roomy handbag instead of a clutch for an effortless evening look.

For a micro metallic slip like Alexa's, head to Topshop.
