I'm a Fashion Expert, and This Is How I Wear Knitted Sets

I'm a magpie for warmth; give me a thick-knit jumper and a water bottle and I'm happy. But while I wait for someone to invent a wearable heated blanket, I've made it my mission to hunt down the cosiest combinations for this time of year.

So, it isn't surprising that when I discovered knitted sets, it felt like they had been created especially for me. But it seems the whole of the fashion world has recognised the benefits of these comfy co-ords, because I've been spotting them everywhere recently. Not only does double-knit keep you feeling snug (particularly if you opt for a premium material like cashmere), but your outfit will always match. That's an added bonus for lazy dressers like me.

While my love for knitted sets was instant, I will admit that I initially struggled a little to style them. With some of the top-and-trouser options I tried out, I couldn't shake the feeling that I looked like I'd stepped out of the house in loungewear. That is until I played around and figured out exactly how to elevate this cold-weather staple.

As always, I looked to Instagram for guidance, and it didn't disappoint. Check out the polished looks that taught me how to wear knitted sets, below.

1. With Jeans and Flats

Style Notes: My favourite way to wear knitted cardigan-and-top sets is as I would a jumper, with jeans and flats. I've found this is a perfect outfit formula for everyday.

2. With Elevated Staples

Style Notes: As knitted sets can look quite loungewear-like, I enjoy bringing in some more elevated items like a trench coat to smarten things up.

3. With Lots of Layering

Style Notes: I told you I'm a stickler for staying warm, didn't I? I'd also add a long wool coat on top of this look, of course.

4. With Sneakers and Relaxed Tailoring

Style Notes: In my opinion, wide-leg trousers work with most things, but I'm partial to dressing them down with sneakers and relaxed knitwear.

5. With Cosy Outerwear

Style Notes: On those extra chilly days, I've taken to layering a snug shearling jacket over my matching knitwear. It just so happens to be really on-trend, too.

6. With Glam Accessories

Style Notes: It's not just trouser and top sets that have caught my eye. Chiara's knitted dress and cardi two-piece is the perfect balance between cosy and chic, and is certainly what I want to be wearing all winter long. Dress it up for festivities with heels or down with trainers.

7. With Ankle Boots

Style Notes: Knitted sets don't need to be for weekend lounging, as Rikke proves in her maxi skirt and sweater duo. Add polished accessories including heeled ankle boots and you're set for work, dinner, lunch and everything else in between.
