I'd Never Wear "Dad" Trainers, So Here Are the Sneakers I'll Buy Instead

I have a confession to make: I don't really do sneakers. And before you roll your eyes and dismiss me as a heel-wearing, high-maintenance fashionista, let me assure you that I live in ballet flats, Chelsea boots, loafers and brogues, so practicality has always been a priority. I've always admired girls who manage to pull off the whole "laid-back with an urban twist" look, but I've always felt my best when my outfits have more polish, and that generally means a smarter shoe style.

Yet something has shifted this season. As I was browsing this season's street style shots, I noticed quite a few influencers stepping out in Converse. But worry not, we're not talking the skinny jeans–and–band tee pairings that pervaded our teenage years—this is elegant, grown-up dressing at its best. The effect is startlingly chic. Dad trainers? Slightly unwieldy and aggressive-looking. Supergas? A tad too simple. Converse, on the other hand, offer the perfect middle ground. They look cool in a retro way, yet they're classic enough to go with most things in your wardrobe.

Just check out the fashion girls below, who wear theirs with everything from midi skirts and floral frocks to puff ball dresses and white jeans. Who knows? Maybe I am a trainer person after all. Scroll down to see and shop my favourite Converse outfits.

Style Notes: For a little injection of rock 'n' roll into your weekend wardrobe, try knotting a red scarf with a white shirt and adding straight-leg jeans. The ultimate pairing for black high-tops.

2. Chunky Knit + Pleated Midi Skirt

Style Notes: This showgoer knows how to elevate her Converse… Simply add a luxe knit, a pleated midi and chunky gold jewellery. Just too cool.

3. Floral Midi + Gold Jewellery

Style Notes: Transition your summer dresses into the autumn months with a pair of white high-tops like ASOS Lotte has here. Comfortable, stylish and great for the cooler weather.

Style Notes: Kaia's officially the queen of the model-off-duty look. We're so into her heritage tailoring, white denim and laid-back sneakers.

5. Puffball Dress + Colour-Pop Bag

Style Notes: Okay, this is officially our fave look. Who says Converse were just for casual occasions? Donna Wallace makes a good case for wearing them with a statement party dress in this dramatic getup.
