Here's How I'm Styling This Summer's Most Unlikely Staple

If you had told me two years ago that one of my favourite new purchases would be a tie-dye bodysuit, I would've been dubious. If you had then told me that it would become a staple in my summer capsule, I would've laughed out loud. Let's just say print hasn't exactly had a leading role in my wardrobe over the last 10 years.

Often it's the most unexpected pieces that become the building blocks of your wardrobe. You can buy all the basic tees, plain dresses and sensible trousers you want, but sometimes, something unexpected will surprise you with its versatility. For me, it was Ninety Percent's tie-dye bodysuit.

Long sleeved, fitted, low backed and rendered in this season's favourite throwback print, I quickly realised that this bodysuit is not only flattering but also infinitely useful for people like me whose wardrobes are mostly made up of tailored separates. While it might come in a basic shape, the print is just what I need to elevate a pair of black trousers or beige shorts. Oh, and if you needed further persuasion, it's made from Tencel, which is a sustainably produced fabric. Cue smug bragging rights.

Just to show you quite how versatile it is, I've put together five different outfits you can copy this summer. From my fave Topshop slip skirt to a tailored jumpsuit, scroll down to see all the ways I'm wearing my favourite staple right now.

1. Leather Trousers and a Shirt

Style Notes: This ensemble is perfect for cooler summer days, thanks to the light layering (Ninety Percent's bodysuit is a layering godsend). I like how it adds a pop of print to a classic white shirt and faux-leather trousers. I could also imagine swapping out the shirt for a beige blazer.

2. Slip Skirt and Strappy Heels

Style Notes: I've struggled to work out what tops to wear with my Topshop slip skirt. A white tee usually does the job, but that's where my inspiration ends. A bodysuit, however, is a fab alternative, as it's fitted enough to give a streamlined silhouette, but still helps to elevate the slip's monochromatic simplicity.

3. Jumpsuit and Chunky Sandals

Style Notes: I bought this Arket jumpsuit last year and wore it constantly. Luckily, the all-in-one is still going strong this summer, and the muted hue of my jumpsuit is a great match for all the vibrant colourways and prints proliferating right now. If you can't decide what jacket to wear with it, a long-sleeved bodysuit is an ideal solution.

4. Belted Shorts and Toe-Loop Sandals

Style Notes: High-waisted shorts aren't the easiest thing in the world to style, especially if you don't want to look like you've just stepped off the beach. This Vince pair needs a fitted top to balance out the roomy silhouette, and my bodysuit fits the bill perfectly. Fab for both summer in the city and cocktails on the beach.

Style Notes: Last, but by no means least, are my trusty Whistles Barrel Leg Jeans. They've got to be one of the best denim fits around at the moment, and I like how they offer them in a range of shades. I wasn't sure at first what top would look good with my brown pair, but turns out blue tie-dye was the answer to my prayers. Who knew?
