Who What Wear readers know that we love everything—and we do mean everything—about French style. Parisians in particular are known for embodying the word “chic.” They seem to intuitively know what looks good, and they never try too hard. Instead of speculating from afar about what makes a truly Gallic wardrobe, we asked blogger Deborah Reyner Sebag, aka The Daily Deb, to give us some of those coveted style tips. Here, she gives us the details on the number one most popular (and surprising) outfit formula the French wear in spring.
The Street Styler
Right now, there’s one outfit that French women love to wear during the spring, and that’s the mac-and-dress combo. The mac is undeniably the transitional coat that everyone should have in their wardrobes. However, wearing it with a dress gives it a chic and super-French look.
But, I hear you ask, what’s so different about how French women like to wear this outfit? Well, firstly, the mac, unlike the trench coat, is not worn belted, but left often. Then you want to ensure you choose a sweet-feeling dress, as the real key way to wearing this outfit is to clash the structured mac with a pretty frock. For example, we'll opt for an an oversized mac but wear something like a long, flowy white dress underneath.
If you’re worried your outfit is a little too “simple,” then you can add personality with a more eccentric choice of accessories. For example, I pair my look with a yellow bag, or a pink one, as not only do they go so well with beige, the colours are everywhere right now and perfect for spring.
Finally, don’t forget your touch of black—it wouldn’t be a truly French outfit otherwise. But seeing as the temperatures are still low, there’s no question of wearing open-toe shoes. Instead, I’d go for chic cowboy boots from somewhere like Dior.
