A Love Letter to the British High Street, by Ashley Madekwe

There are so many things I miss about living in London. My mum’s cooking, public transport (yes, really!), saying hello to strangers… But high-street shopping is one of the things I miss the most. Most of these brands are now available online (thank goodness), but you can’t beat the process of walking into a shop, having a good sort through the racks and then trying everything on and discovering a real bargain.

The high street is my favourite way to tap into trends that I don’t think will necessarily stand the test of time or I that I don’t feel are worth investing large amounts of money into at this point. And now, more than ever, the high street quickly jumps onto booming, must-have trends and makes them more accessible, meaning that all budgets can get their fashion fix. I love you, Great British High Street!

Go through the gallery to see which key pieces I've got on my shopping list right now…

I love a chunky platform and red velvet always looks sumptuous and luxe to me!

I’ve said this before but… cropped flares are the jean of the summer!

I’m all about the shoulders this summer. This dress has a great vintage silhouette, but the colour keeps it fresh and modern.

These slides would be great with cropped jeans and a little Breton striped tee.

This is great interpretation of the '70s trend seen at Gucci. Your wallet won't suffer too much, promise!

A slip dress is a classic. Vintage is of course great, but getting the fit just right can be tricky. That’s why I love it when the high street does up-to-date versions of vintage-inspired pieces.

I’m obsessed with these embroidered jeans! I’ll be wearing these all summer long with a white Bardot top and a pair of espadrilles.

Far from basic, these sunnies add a fun pop of interest to any outfit this summer.

The temperature drops at night here in L.A., so I often keep a moto jacket with me to drape over my shoulders. I love that this one is navy blue—it's less harsh and little more interesting than your usual black.
