We Called This Non-Skinny Jean Trend Ages Ago, and Well, We Were Right
Reflecting on the evolution of your personal style is a fun, enlightening, and oftentimes cringe-inducing experience. I've always been a denim devotee, but I realised recently that my jeans preferences have changed significantly over the years. Gone are the days of squeezing myself into skinnies and enduring compromised circulation in my legs—all in the name of fashion. In 2023, the slimmest cut you'll find me in a straight-leg, and even then I feel a little restricted.
With this in mind, I've been watching in quiet delight as one of Who What Wear's biggest trend predictions has come to fruition: wide-leg jeans. The signs were there at the tail-end of 2022, but now it's clear that this dramatic shape is here to stay. We're especially fond of the silhouette high-waisted iterations create; there's something about the contrast between the nipped-in waist and ultra-wide leg that really works.
From high-street brands like H&M and Arket to high-end designers like Chloé and Khaite, there are so many options for you to try out—whether you need to dip your toe in first with a subtle flare, or are ready to embrace full-on palazzo jeans. Either way, the it-girls of Instagram have beat you to it, so we've rounded up our favourite looks to get you started on your wide-leg jeans journey. Enjoy.
1. Cream Turtleneck + Wide-Leg Jeans + Crossbody Bag
Style Notes: This simple outfit is one you can easily recreate at home. All you need is a cosy cream jumper, blue wide-leg jeans and a cross-body bag (we suggest the best-selling COS style).

Versatile staples like this are what M&S does best.
2. Shearling Jacket + Wide-Leg Jeans + Crop Top
Style Notes: The cold weather looks to be sticking around for the foreseeable future, so it's not too late to invest in a classic shearling coat. Paired with wide-leg trousers, the effect is decidedly ’70s.

3. Bodysuit + Wide-Leg Jeans + Black Boots
Style Notes: If you're planning on taking your wide-leg jeans out for the evening, show off your figure with a skin-skimming bodysuit. Zara has some great options.

The sizing of Zara's jeans is tricky, so you might want to order one larger than your usual.
6. Leather Trench + Wide-Leg Jeans + Heeled Boots
Style Notes: In 2022, we all collectively realised just how chic leather trench coats are. The good news is they're just as relevant this year, and they look *so good* with wide-leg jeans.

Bébhinn Campbell is an Edinburgh-based fashion and lifestyle writer. After receiving an Audrey Hepburn box set for her 10th birthday and subsequently swooning over the actor’s wardrobe, Bébhinn felt pretty confident she wanted a career that involved clothes. She started her first blog at age 14—the title was a pun, but we’ll leave it at that—and went on to intern at print and digital publications in Berlin and London, including Dazed & Confused and Indie magazine.
A job at a fashion startup took Bébhinn from Ireland to Scotland in 2019, where she now works as a freelance journalist and copywriter covering everything from travel and interiors to styling advice. As a contributor for Who What Wear, Bébhinn always keeps her eyes peeled for emerging trends and looks worth writing about. She prides herself on her ability to cut through the noise and identify solid investment buys, exciting new brands and updated takes on classic designs.
While she still loves Audrey Hepburn films, these days, Bébhinn’s sartorial taste sits closer to Annie Hall’s and Alexa Chung’s. In her spare time, she’s likely cooing over cute dogs on rescue websites, playing folk songs on her guitar and browsing bookshops for new additions to her already-overpacked shelves.
