Exclusive: Harley Viera-Newton Tries Out a Surprising New Look

Ever since 1980, when a 15-year-old Brooke Shields coyly told the world that nothing came between her and her Calvins, Calvin Klein Jeans has had their finger on the coolest of-the-moment influencers. The brand’s newly launched campaign for the #mycalvins x Opening Ceremony series is further proof of that, opening with Kendall Jenner, and followed now—with images revealed for the first time right here—by fashion’s favourite DJ, Harley Viera-Newton.

The line’s array of vintage-inspired denim and sporty shorts and tees might be an unexpected match for Viera-Newton’s more feminine leanings, but it sure looks good on her. We recently chatted with the model-slash-DJ about what drew her to the collection, whose style she admires most, and what she can’t stop listening to these days. Scroll down to see what she had to say!

You're known for a more feminine aesthetic, often seen in the coolest floral dresses with a red lip, so what drew you to the more casual vibe of CK x Opening Ceremony? Do you have a favourite item from the line?

I think that's actually why this shoot was so fun for me! I do tend to gravitate towards a more vintage, girly aesthetic, but Calvin Klein helped me realise that there's a way to make sportswear and denim feminine. I've always loved a good pair of jean shorts and a great denim shirt, so that wasn't really a departure for me—but the sweat short outfit was a new look, and I’m obsessed! They are the most comfortable things I've ever put on, and I haven't really taken them off since. They are perfect for throwing on after the gym and running errands around the city in.

What does the off-duty Harley Viera-Newton wear?

Well, as of late, it’s been the sweat shorts and sweatshirt—my new lounging uniform. And I also have a pair of Charlotte Olympia kitten slippers that I put on as soon as I'm home.

How has your style changed over the years and what influenced that transformation?

I think as you grow up you try lots of different styles to figure out what is really you and what you feel best in—a sort of trial and error. It's about learning to dress for your own personality, and you know when you've found it. That's why I tend to shy away from trends—I find style to be so personal. My biggest style influence is probably travel, I pick up inspiration everywhere I go and somehow that translates into what I wear.

How does DJing affect your style choices? Do you cater your look to the specifics of an event?

Honestly, I don’t really. Unless there is a dress code for a certain event, DJing doesn't really limit me at all.

Whose style do you admire more than anyone else's?

My mum is my ultimate style icon because she always looks so chic and put together while remaining very effortless. Style comes so naturally to her—she looks good in everything because she makes it her own with subtle little twists.

I'm always hesitant to bother DJs at an event while they're working. How would you advise people to handle that if they want to take a picture or make a song request?

It really depends on what your request is and if it actually makes sense for where you are and what the DJ is [already] playing. That means if we're at a casual early cocktail event, you probably shouldn’t request an insane house song (you'd be surprised by how many people do). But really as long as you only ask once, and as long as you understand that it might not happen, then it's totally fine. If someone is polite I'll always try to make it happen.

Which artists should we all be adding to our playlists right now?

Leon Bridges, Tame Impala, and Father John Misty.

What's your desert island fashion or beauty item?

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream.

If you could give your younger-self fashion advice, what would it be?

Dress for yourself and no one else!
