Gwyneth Paltrow Circa 1998 Is Exactly How I Want to Dress Right Now

This year many of us have revisited the minimalist aesthetic that Calvin Klein made the height of cool in the '90s, wearing fuss-free satin slip dresses and skirts, a muted colour palette, straight leg denim, sweeping duster coats and strappy sandals. It is a uniform that is all about simplicity, however, it has an attitude thanks to leather pieces, oval sunglasses and chunky footwear that give basics a tougher edge. Kate Moss is often considered the original adopter of this way of dressing, but Gwyneth Paltrow also wore a leopard print coat and satin robe better than anyone.

Just like Kate Moss, Gwyneth's look was artfully disheveled, as she lived in her black suede Adidas Gazelles, leather jackets that look like they could have been borrowed from her boyfriend (who was Brad Pitt at the time) and straight-cut Levi's. She wore the oval sunglasses, weighty leather slides and minimal tote bags that cool girls are revisiting all over again. Keep scrolling to see Gwyneth's coolest '90s looks, and then shop the aesthetic at Arket, Whistles, Weekday and more.

Style Notes: Gwyneth Paltrow's '90s style is an awful lot like Kate Moss's, as she lived in high-waisted, straight-leg jeans, oversized black jackets or leather jackets and her Adidas Gazelles.

Style Notes: On a night with Winona Ryder, Gwyneth wore the most amazingly '90s outfit pairing a black spaghetti strap crop top with a blue printed maxi skirt and stacked flatforms. Gwyneth was also a big fan of wrapping knitwear around her shoulders in a preppy knot.

Style Notes: This is our all-time favourite Gwyneth look—she paired a long-sleeved button-down maxi dress with—you guessed it—black chunky heels and tiny sunglasses, and she had her hair pulled back into a simple plait.

Style Notes: Gwyneth's off-duty uniform seems so relevant for now: She wore high-waisted jeans, Converse trainers, a white T-shirt and black leather jacket.

Style Notes: Gwyneth's red carpet go-to in the '90s was a satin or silk slip dress, and Elizabeth and James have created an almost identical version this season.
