You can always rely on the Golden Globes red carpet to deliver breathtaking fashion moments, but unless you have a budget for Chanel couture or custom Gucci, it's not usually a place for styling inspiration. This year, however, among the many bespoke couture gowns and staggering fine jewellery, we noticed a trend that you can copy at home for only £4.
Sienna Miller wore a white Michael Kors gown with cutouts at her waist, but it was the simple black ribbon in her ponytail that we really loved. It was a youthful and fresh alternative to the often overly coiffed red carpet hairstyles. Michelle Williams also wore a simple black ribbon, tying hers in a simple bow around her neck, adding more personality to her strapless lace Louis Vuitton gown. Of course, Williams could have had her pick of the most precious necklaces in the world, but the black ribbon looked modern and was a nod to the choker trend that exploded in 2016.
To copy the look at home, follow Michelle's lead and opt for a thinner ribbon for tying around the neck, while a thicker velvet style, such as Sienna Miller's, works best around a ponytail. Fashion editor Martha Ward, who is known for almost always wearing a ribbon, explains where she buys hers: "As a bow-wearer since childhood, I am constantly on a quest for ribbon. I seek them out wherever I go, be it John Lewis, gift shops, haberdashers or a ribbon that's come wrapped around a gift. I have a little stash of shop ribbons too—Chanel, Jo Malone … and Net-a-Porter black grosgrain is always a winner."
She continues: "Choosing the right ribbon is one thing, but tying it right is key. You must master the perfect bow. That little hint of prettiness is often required, and I don't like to be without one at hand. You never know when you might need to be just that extra bit pretty or girly."
