Spring Denim

Though we love wearing denim year-round, spring ushers in particularly cool denim options featuring paler washes, lightweight fabrics, and easygoing silhouettes. As expected, this season's offerings have convinced us we must replenish our already denim-heavy wardrobes with new pieces pronto! From a breezy jean skirt perfect for any music festival ensemble to an updated pair of skinny jeans that will surely become a trusty go-to, we compiled a handful of denim must-haves for spring-all of which we highly recommend you Go Buy Now.

On The Runway & Street
While a number of S/S 12 collections featured pale spring denim (we vividly recall a cool oversized vest at 3.1 Phillip Lim and a sweeping long skirt at Balmain), we zeroed in on Acne's runway look when seeking inspiration for today's story. Designer Jonny Johansson's Scarlett Denim Jacket ($440) in Washed Blue and Sabine Frill Skirt (which was sadly not produced, although the label's Sabine Denim Skirt ($270) in Washed Indigo is a similar alternative) echoed a '90s-inspired grunge aesthetic that's utterly on-trend this season! The details in these denim pieces, such as the jacket's wide sleeves and the midi skirt's button-down front, lend both a decidedly unique spin. Paired with the Penny Blouse ($350) in Black and Dandelion Heels ($600) in Orange Glitter (the shoes were only produced in Black and Blue, however), Acne's runway ensemble exudes a laid-back vibe ideal for spring. If, however, the jean-on-jean look is a tad too much for you, Kate Bosworth's stylish getup provides a more pared-down way of wearing the trend. The actress layered a denim jacket over Vanessa Bruno's floral Dress ($300) from the F/W 11 collection (which is sadly no longer available), then finished off her outfit with Chloe's Susanna Studded Buckle Boots ($1235) for a comfortable yet chic look!

On The Market
1. TEXTILE Elizabeth and James Ozzy Jeans ($178, available May 5) in Heaven
It seems like every season we find a new must-have pair of jeans to covet, and this time around, we've got our eye on TEXTILE Elizabeth and James' slightly faded rendition. In a classic silhouette and goes-with-anything light blue wash, we imagine these jeans will quickly become a weekend wardrobe staple, paired with your favourite ballet flats (for lazy weekends) or strappy heels (for nights on the town).

2. Citizens of Humanity Vagabond Denim Moto Jacket ($297) in Vagabond
Quick confession: we have a weakness for moto jackets, as they serve as the perfect outerwear option to inject a little tough-girl edge to any look. That's why we were thrilled to stumble upon Citizens of Humanity's two-tone denim version! This particular style--cropped with three-quarter-length sleeves--is effortlessly chic. We love the idea of teaming the patchwork jacket with white denim and brown leather accents for a polished warm-weather outfit.

3. Free People Rigid Denim Shift Dress ($128) in Hartford Blue
We think Free People's denim shift offers a refreshing alternative to standard date-night attire (i.e. the little black dress or a dressy-top-and-jeans combo) for spring. The button-down mini, featuring subtle white trim and two front pockets, manages to appear both feminine and youthful, while its faded fabrication keeps it from seeming too cutesy.

4. Madewell Denim Wrap Skirt ($78) in Windswept
When you feel like shelving your blue jeans for a day, we suggest picking up this sophisticated Madewell skirt. Though this breezy piece is inspired by '70s-era denim skirts, it's clearly designed for the modern-day style savant! Not only does it come in ridiculously soft denim, the skirt wraps around your waist (you can adjust to suit your preference) and gives you a figure-flattering shape.

5. Cheap Monday Colleen Denim Shirt ($60) in Shifting Light Blue
Cheap Monday's button-down top comes in the palest-of-pale denim washes, and is all the more versatile for it! In our opinion, the cool cotton shirt is an ideal pick for balmy spring afternoons; you can wear it with dark jeans for an all-over denim ensemble, or leave it unbuttoned over a floral frock for a Bosworth-esque getup. As if you needed further convincing, its wallet-friendly price tag is also a plus!

6. Rachel Comey Kiefer Tie-Dyed Canvas and Leather-Trim Slingback Sandals ($370)
If you feel like testing out spring denim in a more subtle way, Rachel Comey's flat sandals are your best bet. A combination of soft brown leather and denim-like canvas, these splurge-worthy shoes offer an understated way of sporting the trend. And because they're sandals, these kicks are easily comfortable enough for beachside strolls, music festivals, outdoor barbecues, and all manner of warm-weather activities!--Tiffany Tse
