Who What Wear readers know that we love everything—and we do mean everything—about French style. Parisian women in particular are known for embodying the word “chic.” They seem to intuitively know what looks good, and they never try too hard. Instead of speculating from afar about what makes a truly Gallic wardrobe, we asked blogger Deborah Reyner Sebag, aka The Daily Deb, to give us some of those coveted style tips. Here, she tackles the “ugly” sneaker trend. Yes, French women love it as much as we do, but they have their own take on it. Here’s Deborah to give us the details…
Right now, everyone’s talking about “ugly” sneakers. They’re on the feet of nearly every fashion influencer and have taken over my Instagram feed. However, despite their ubiquity, they’re nearly always sold out (see the Balenciaga Triple S sneakers, for example) and are about three times more expensive than traditional trainers. While many choose to wear these with smart track pants or long floral dresses, French women have a different take on the trend. Keep scrolling to see the three ways to do the “ugly” sneaker trend according to Parisians.
Style Notes: The first way to do this is with a long masculine coat (I particularly love this blue one from Ganni) and a bold scarf on top—to channel a sporty-but-smart ensemble. As for the sneaker part, my current favourites are Louis Vuitton’s spring/summer 2018 clumpy trainers (pictured) or Stella McCartney’s Eclypse style. Important: You can’t do the “ugly” trainer trend without having box-fresh sneakers.
Style Notes: Another way to wear this trend is with wide-leg trousers. I just love the combination with oversized sneakers. However, to make it feminine, layer over a dress and carry a French classic—the basket bag.
Style Notes: For the final look, if you don't want to wear a dress over trousers, go more traditional and add a shirt over your wide-leg trousers (or jeans) and a leather jacket. This is a quintessential French outfit, but the addition of the sneakers gives it the twist.
