Trend Report: Traditional Patterns

Heritage patterns and prints reappear season after wintry season in a remix of the contemporary and the classic, so you won't faint on the tube to read that A/W 2015 is no different. Traditional prints are back, but this time they are cooler than ever before. The big three to look for are houndstooth, Prince of Wales check and tartan.

We love how our favourite brands—Rodarte and Acne Studios, to name but two—reinterpreted the classic weaves with surprising new silhouettes and personality-packed design flourishes. Miu Miu took a coquettish, whimsical approach to the houndstooth and offset an oversized version of the pattern with snakeskin leather pockets on its thick coats (wear with charisma).

Saint Laurent continued its exploration of the punk with premium sensibilities, hence the Baby Punk satchel in tartan. Yes, please. Chanel and Altuzarra went for subtle and ladylike twists on the traditional cloth, with minimalistic styling and loose-cut tailoring. Whichever style twist you go for, read this first to get the low-down on the look.

Chanel A/W 15

Catwalk Notes: The slightly oversized cut of the tailoring lends a effortless-twist to this skirt suit.

Rodarte A/W 15

Catwalk Notes: The classic check blazer gets a 2015 spin with a velvet collar, skin-tight leather trousers and statement sunglasses.

Alexander Wang A/W 15

Catwalk Notes: Inspired by Scottish clan tartan patterns, Wang reimagined the weave for 2015 with a directional twist that's highly wearable.

Acne Studios A/W 15

Catwalk Notes: The brand cut a whole new silhouette with its rounded, oversized appearance, open-stitch seams and contrast buttons.

Marc Jacobs A/W 15

Catwalk Notes: Marc Jacobs's winter '15 girl wants ladylike pieces punctuated with leather accessories made for fast-paced city life. Checks and tartans made the collection gel.

Miu Miu A/W 15

Catwalk Notes: The classic is made kitsch here with playful colours and python-trim details. Not for fashion's faint-hearted!

Altuzarra A/W 15

Catwalk Notes: According to this fashion house, traditional prints are best worn with feminine lace and studded leathers.

Head-to-toe traditional tartan? She who dares… Keep other accessories to a bare minimum and stick to natural makeup.

For a look that's instantly wearable, reach for a blanket coat; it's best worn with jeans and your understated wardrobe staples.

On Goldenberg: Chloé Harper Lace-Up Boots (£760) available in black.

Your trusty check shirt will suitably dial down leather trousers and leather boots. Fact.

Double-up your checks prints with a classic jacket (sleeves rolled up, of course) and an off-duty shirt to tap into the heritage trend.

On Yevari: Céline shoes.
