How Celebrities Fake a Smaller Waist

If you’re looking for an easy way to minimise your waistline (without having to hit the gym to do a zillion crunches), we’re here to help. Well, rather, our favourite celebs are.

It’s true: Many of our go-to A-listers are already naturally thin, but we discovered tricks based on their styling choices that could totally work in your life if you’re looking to fake a smaller waist.

Keep scrolling to see what we mean and shop the pieces that’ll get you a tinier waistline like that.

1. Belt your dress, like Kendall Jenner.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but belting a shirtdress or baggier top or coat is the simplest way to fake a smaller waist.

On Jenner: BLQ Basiq Chambray Shirt Dress ($96) in Denim Blue; Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Small Tote Bag ($2750) in Black/Natural; One Teaspoon boots, B-Low the Belt belt.

2. Go for an interesting detail at the waistline, like Mindy Kaling.

Highlight your waistline and get the illusion of a cinched waist by wearing a dress with an interesting belted detail.

On Kaling: Rag & Bone Harrow Leather Boots ($525) in Black.

3. Tuck in your shirt and let it billow, like Olivia Palermo.

Tucking in your shirt accentuates your waistline, and if you let it billow out a bit, it’ll define your small waistline even more.

On Palermo: Dior So Real Metal & Plastic Sunglasses ($545); Schutz heels.

4. Draw attention to the smallest part of your body with a cutout detail, like Beyoncé.

Your waistline really is the smallest part of your body, so if you draw attention to that exact spot with a cutout detail, you’ll look amazing.

On Beyoncé: Self-Portrait dress; Saint Laurent Classic Motorcycle Jacket ($5290) in Black Leather; Manolo Blahnik BB Suede Point-Toe Pumps ($595).

5. Go for high-waisted pants and a shorter top, like Lauren Conrad.

High-waisted pants cut off right at your waist (the smallest part of your torso) for a flattering look—especially if you accentuate that area with a crop top. Plus, note that high-waisted trousers will elongate your legs, too.

On Conrad: LC Lauren Conrad Runway Collection Scallop-Lace Crop Top ($45), High Waist Wide-Leg Pants ($51), and Ankle Strap Women's High Heels ($45).

6. Find something with a built-in cinch, like Gigi Hadid.

If you find a dress or romper that has a little cinch detail built in already, you’ll get that hourglass silhouette without any effort.

On Hadid: Blue Life Silk Wild and Free Romper ($140); Kenneth Cole New York Women’s Kam Fashion Sneaker ($120).

Alexander Wang Pinstriped Dress ($1399)
