How to Transition Your Denim to Fall, According to Experts

Every denim lover knows who Emily Current and Meritt Elliott are. They're the California-based design duo not only responsible for megabrand Current/Elliott, but also their latest venture, The Great, which though only in its third season is already a mainstay in every cool girl’s wardrobe. We caught up with Current and Elliott to chat about their fall collection, which will include denim for the first time. Thankfully, they shared their styling tips for transitioning these pieces into fall, making us all the more excited for the upcoming season. Scroll down to find out what they are, and shop The Great’s denim along the way!

“We always say that this brand is like standing on the edge of a cliff and looking out at a wide expanse—it’s this sort of next step or feeling of the great wide open. I think we see our girl as full of wonder.”

If you’re not already acquainted with The Great, it’s a collection reminiscent of California’s golden years. Current and Elliott cite Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and the Boxcar Children as design inspiration, and the pieces are styled in a way that delightfully tows the line between masculine and feminine. It’s ideal for the tomboy who understands fashion and knows how to still incorporate feminine pieces like a Victorian blouse or eyelet top.

Speaking of understanding fashion, we picked the pair’s brains for ways to incorporate their new denim pieces for fall into our wardrobes. Though we find denim to be one of the more understandable closet staples, coming up with fresh ways to wear it is another story. Keep scrolling for some major insider tips!

The Great The Boxy Jean Jacket ($375)
“This most perfect jean jacket is narrow through the shoulders and arms, and boxy through the body. Its soft hand and easy body makes it great thrown over everything from a long hippie dress to a chunky knit sweater. Its vintage wash makes it timeless and seasonless.”

The Great The Nerd ($265)
“This is the new must-have denim sillouette, as it's as versatile as your trusty cropped skinny. It is high waisted and cropped to reveal your ankle, and is cool with a shorter, boxier top layered with a long trench or drapey blazer. Final touch? A shoe that you want to show off, from your favourite Chuck Taylors to a new sky-high heel.”

The Great The Onesie ($395)
“This cleaned-up overall is soft, drapey, and more sleek and streamlined without the traditional pockets and hardware. Wear with something overtly feminine, like a silk long-sleeve blouse, or something compatibly boyish, like a shrunken plaid button-up. Throw on a shrunken army jacket or blazer as the final fall layer.”

The Great The Slack Straight ($265)
“This oversized and super-straight boyish jean feels authentically vintage and totally effortless. This looks best paired with a smaller, feminine top with eyelet or lace details, and no-fuss, flat, worn-in leather boots or Oxfords.”

The Great The Sunday Dress ($345)
“This easy long-sleeved dress is a fall favourite that can be paired with either a heeled bootie or sweet little flat. For warmth, layer on a textured vest or cropped jacket and throw on opaque tights.”

The Great The Big Shirt ($345)
“This intentionally oversized denim shirt is super drapey, and worn and frayed with character. It’s easily paired with a leather skinny pant or trouser, and super cool tucked into a below-the-knee pencil skirt.”
