Chic Ways to Wear a Denim Skirt Like It's 2018 (Not 2008)

Denim skirts have been thrown back into the ring after a series of seasons left on the bench. They became too ubiquitous, and fashion girls moved onto other items—but thanks to major fashion houses reinventing them for the umpteenth time, there's still life in this old favourite.

Saint Laurent patchworked different denim washes together to create a bohemian midi version. Vetements updated the DIY jean skirt in the same way it created its iconic spliced-and-diced jeans. Dior has smattered crystals all over its offering, while Off-White is providing raw-edged ruffles. The list goes on, and fortunately so do the styling opportunities.

I remember when every other girl at my school in the noughties wore hers short with shearling boots, a pashmina and a little handbag—but times have changed, and now I can locate three particular ways that make this staple piece feel most up-to-date and, more importantly, not like something you'd throw together as a young teen. Keep reading to see and shop denim skirt outfit formulas that work.

Style Notes: Thanks to the return of the blazer, there's a perfect casual-to-smart ratio you can now adopt for your favourite denim skirt. Keep your top underneath simple, and consider this a trusty new uniform.

Style Notes: Denim is a thick fabric, so if you've got more of it on your bottom half, it's wise to balance proportions out with a slimmer top or jumper and heels. This is definitely the way to wear a denim skirt for work.

Style Notes: If your fashion aim in life is to never look too "done," here's the winning combination. Add an oversized knit, an insouciant glare (and/or sunglasses) and whichever shoes please you.

And of course, you can add tights to any of these looks while the weather remains cold.
