Boogie Nights

Unless you've been wilfully ignoring all fashion news lately, you're probably aware that the '70s are back in a big way this spring. From Marc Jacobs' zig-zag knits to Sonia Rykiel's billowy wide-leg pants, there were thrilling looks inspired by this hedonistic, polyester-friendly era all over the runways. In addition to glam-disco fare, the decade's influence is also being expressed in casual ways as well, as you can see from the slew of high-waisted flare jeans, peasant blouses, and platforms that are currently in stores. As we considered all of this, we were struck by how many pieces on the market capture the spirit of Boogie Nights, which is exactly why we're Currently Channeling that movie this month!

For those of you who are not familiar with this, ahem, sexually charged tale, let's get you up to speed--minus the explicit details, of course! Set in 1978 in the San Fernando Valley, the story focuses on Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg), and his rise and fall in the adult film industry. Adams is discovered by well-known director Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) working as a dishwasher in a suburban nightclub. After proving his talent and potential to Horner, Adams gives himself the screen name Dirk Diggler and instantly becomes a star. The film follows a slew of other porn industry insiders--including Little Bill (William H. Macy), Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly), Amber Waves (Julianne Moore), Rollergirl (Heather Graham) and Buck Swope (Don Cheadle)--tracking the success and failures they face trying to make it in the adult film business.

Certainly each of the characters has an intriguing story, but the real star of the film is the wardrobe! Complete with plenty of slinky jumpsuits, free-spirited poolside attire, and funky accessories, the clothing is definitely fun and perfectly in keeping with the season's overall vibe. But don't think you have to jump into a bright red, three-piece polyester suit to channel Boogie Nights correctly! We've gathered a to-die-for selection of '70s-inspired pieces that are completely fun and wearable without having any costume-like cheesiness attached. Hope you enjoy!

Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony Sunglasses ($405)
Who could resist these darling sunnies from the Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony collection? Certainly not us! Created with eyewear experts Barton Perreira and inspired by Andy Warhol ingénue Candy Darling, these retro round frames are definitely a must-buy item. Plus, the adorable heart detail on the lenses makes them feel like a fresh version of Rollergirl's heart-frame sunglasses. And while the featured pair is definitely investment-worthy, Urban Outfitters' Printed Metal Heart Sunglasses ($14) and A.J. Morgan's Love Child Sunglasses ($15) both come with a thrilling price tag and are super cute too!

Paul & Joe Stance Silk Jumpsuit ($580)
Though we are completely smitten with the lavish jumpsuits at Marc Jacobs, this muted version by Paul & Joe is also at the top of our list. The ivory hue and sheer silk fabric make it a chic choice, especially for those of you looking for a subtle way to try this trend. Even better: it's a super comfortable option that you can wear casually in the day and dress up at night! If you're in the market for a less expensive option, we think Bebe's Pleated Front Silk Jumpsuit ($149) is a worthy alternative you'll want to pick up today.

Tory Burch McLean Mini Messenger ($365, pre-order 866.480.8679) in Honey
While the oversized hobo bag is beloved by the'70s bohemian girl, this petite carrier by Tory Burch is an ideal choice for a sophisticated girl on the go. Though the flap-top satchel shape has a retro look, this messenger bag is definitely modern, thanks to its luxe gold chain and sweet honey hue. Perfectly neutral, this fuss-free bag is sure to give your look a polished finish. Better order yours today before the wait list gets too long! Can't stand the wait? We don't blame you, Topshop's Grosgrain Nude and Bow Long Strap Lock Detail Bag ($55) is a lovely alternative you can try now!

NARS Duo Creamy Eyeshadow ($32) in Burn It Blue
While some of you might cringe at the thought of wearing bright blue eyeshadow, the bold colour is a refreshing compliment to the season's myriad of happy hues and, of course, an essential part of the '70s femme's makeup bag. Accordingly, we were thrilled to find this knockout eyeshadow duo from NARS. Featuring two stunning shades of blue--shimmering sky and a lovely pool-like tone--this colour combo will instantly illuminate your eyelids, while giving them a long-lasting and gorgeous glossy finish.

Marc Jacobs Stripe Top ($625)
Your Who What Wear editors have been drooling over this amazing knit sweater since it made it strutted down the runway with a matching pair of hot pants. Thanks to its cheerful colour palette and zippy stripe print, this top will transport you straight back to the '70s! In addition to this lust-worthy pick, we are also smitten with Catherine Malandrino's Multicolor V-Neck Pullover ($250), which has a similarly vibrant print at a fraction of the cost.

Forever 21 Sateen Floral Headband ($6)
When we first spotted this delicate headband we knew it would be the perfect way to pay homage to the film's gorgeous redhead, Amber Waves. This oh-so cute accessory offers plenty of girlish charm and a dash of groovy flare, and will definitely work well with all your favourite spring pieces.

Gap Vintage Flare Jeans ($70)
If there is one thing we are certain of this spring, it's that you must own a pair of wide-leg or flare jeans! And just in case you haven't already snagged a few from our lust-worthy selection in Go Buy Now: '70s-Style Jeans, we thought we'd provide you with another option we can't live without: Gap's Vintage Flare. Not only are they super comfy, but they also give you a slim and elongated silhouette (very flattering).

Mulberry D-Ring Wrap Wedges ($795)
The key to any '70s-driven ensemble is a killer pair of platforms. That being said, we can't wait to try out these amazing snake-print wedges by Mulberry! Their earthy spirit, gorgeous oak colour, and wrap-around ankle strap make them a heavenly footwear option this season. For a literal interpretation of today's subject, try them with a pair of flare jeans and a striped top, or style them with a printed, full skirt. Not quite in your spring wardrobe budget? Don't panic, because Steve Madden's Egoismo Wedges ($100) in Cognac are a spot-on option that is equally covetable.

Alexis Bittar Skinny Bangles ($70 each) in Assorted Colours
Vibrant accessories, and plenty of them, are a must when completing your Boogie Nights ensembles. These Lucite bangles by Alexis Bittar are an excellent way to add an extra splash of colour to your look. How many you choose to wear is up to you, but we love the idea of stacking a bunch up the arm for a playful finish.--Jessica Baker
