This Perfect Breton Top Is the Only New Thing I've Bought So Far This Year

I'm not much of a New Year's resolution maker, but for 2022, I made the decision to try and buy less new clothing. Of course, I have to add the caveat that I am sent the odd fashion item as part of my job. However, within my personal spending allowance, I wanted to, where possible, look for items second-hand first before I took the plunge with a new purchase. So far this year, I have made one concession: a perfect Breton top from COS.

I find that certain staples, such as T-shirts and underwear, don't lend themselves so well to vintage fashion, so when I realised that one of my favourite Breton tops had come to the end of its lifespan, I started the difficult process of finding a hard-working replacement. So what made this COS top better than the other iterations I found? Well, first and foremost, the fabric (100% organic cotton) was notably high-quality: It was sturdy and heavyweight, which allowed it to hang nicely without being tucked in. It also had a satisfying boxy fit, which somehow felt more modern than other, close-fitting high-street styles I saw. Size-wise, I found that the top came up a little loose, so I bought an XS. (I would usually go for a S or UK 8 to 10.)

Luckily enough, COS has brought the top out in five different shades, so you can choose your own spin on the style, but I decided to go for green as a fun twist on the classic blue Breton. I've already worn my top with knitted trousers when working from home and with jeans and cowboy boots at the weekend. I'm sure I'll be wearing it for many years to come. Scroll down to see and shop the top.
