13 Times Cats and Fashion Combined to Make the World a Better Place

Little-known fact (or at least little acknowledged here in the fashion community): Today is National Cat Day! What does that mean exactly? Nothing much, unless you’re a cat lover—then it potentially means everything.

Founded by self-proclaimed cat-obsessed Colleen Paige—also a celebrity pet expert and author—the day serves little more purpose than simply for cat owners and lovers to share their mutual adoration for the furry little animals. It might not seem like cats have much of a place in the haughty world of fashion, but they actually have played quite an integral role over the years.

From starring roles in multiple Vogue editorials to an even more spotlighted position at the center of Karl Lagerfeld’s heart, cats are often front and center in the realm of fashion. In honour of the feline species’ special day, we’re counting down the best times cats and fashion combined to make the world a better (or at least cuter!) place.

1. When a kitty posed alongside a top model.

StyleStalker

We can’t decide who’s more alluring in this photograph: Russian-Australian model Anja Konstantinova, or her fluffy feline friend. Back in 2011, for the S/S 12 StyleStalker lookbook, Konstantinova teamed up with a white kitty who helped make the clothes look that much better, and the model donned cat ears to transform into one herself.

2. When a cat went to New York Fashion Week.

Purina ONE

Cat food brand Purina ONE had the genius idea of bringing a cat to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week during the F/W 13 season. The kitty not only hit the blogger-frequented steps of Lincoln Center (shown), but he also hit the runway for Tracy Reese’s show.

3. When cats wore cardigans.

Distractify

Apropos of absolutely nothing, Distractify did a massive slideshow of cats wearing cardigans. Because this is the age of the Internet, and why not?

4. When cats were adorably illustrated in stylish looks.

Photo:

Heather Mattoon

Cartoonist Heather Mattoon is a genius in her own right; she paints feline friends wearing everything from on-trend statement sweatshirts to grandpa cardigans. She also does dogs, but don’t tell anyone we told you. It’s National Cat Day, after all.

5. When designers have chosen cats as their muse.

Choupette's Diary

There is no more famous feline muse than Choupette Lagerfeld, who is absolutely the apple of her designer father’s eye. She has her own beauty collection, is coming out with her own fashion line, and has already inspired countless designs from the infamous Karl.

6. When they’ve been photographed wearing full outfits.

Noah Sheldon

Photographer Noah Sheldon really took cat-meets-fashion to the next level when he captured a slew of the feline creatures wearing everything from shift dresses to mumus. We feel confident the cats absolutely hated it, but the results are too cute to handle.

7. When they wore insanely expensive fine jewellery.

U.K. magazine Stylist took a pretty major risk when they put the domesticated felines in pieces of fine jewellery reaching into the tens of thousands of dollars.

8. When Bagheera wore Bulgari.

You have to admit: Doesn’t this Bulgari necklace all the more appealing against a gorgeous black coat of fur?

9. When United Bamboo made cat-sized versions of their collection for humans.

Also photographed by Noah Sheldon, these clothed cats were all put into a calendar, which you can still buy online for a mere $50.

10. When Vogue cleverly cast cats in a shoe editorial.

Vogue

When Vogue’s online editorial team was deciding how to best show off a curated collection of S/S 15 designer shoes, they knew what they had to do: Juxtapose the shoes with cats. The story went viral, and is still among the most beloved shoe editorials in the fashion community.

11. When black-and-white got a whole new name.

Because nothing makes Jason Wu’s buckle-strap mules look more  adorable than a cat with matching fur.

12. When this cat wore the Céline sneakers.

Arguably the most recognisable (and, in our opinion, best) shots of the Vogue editorial is this one of an orange tabby in the tartan Céline sneakers from S/S 15. The cutest!

13. When this cat paid homage to Grace Coddington.

The iconic Vogue editor is an infamous cat lady, so it makes sense that when model Karen Elson paid homage to her for this August 2008 photo shoot, she posed alongside a feline critter.
