She’s the queen of the FROW, one of the best dressed women in the world, and probably has the most celebrated wardrobe in Paris—Caroline de Maigret is officially a constant, confident presence on the best dressed list. Fact. When we clocked that Vogue UK’s Contributing Fashion Editor Bay Garnett got a sneak peak inside her famous wardrobe, it prompted us to take a quick stock check on her hottest and latest outfits so far this season.
As with all clothing ensembles that the French model, writer, and music producer wears, there are hidden style twists and ever-true fashion lessons one can learn simply by decoding one of her looks. From having a personal armoury of slick jackets that fit you just so to finding key pieces that will reveal a little unexpected mystery (a neckline that shows off the collar bone) while you go about your high-speed life, here’s your fast-track course in looking hot 24-7 without really trying.
Scroll down for a 101 on how to look gorgeous with zero-effort cool from the master, Caroline:
Cultivate a little outfit mystery without being overtly provocative by keeping some buttons undone on purpose. The key to pulling this off is to be totally covered up everywhere else (long sleeves, generous hemlines, and high necks). A slight flash of the collar bone is a French woman's favourite secret weapon.
The devil is in the details when it comes to the wool two-piece. Make like Caroline: wear a relaxed T-shirt (untucked) with a perfectly-tailored suit and team it with your trusty sunglasses and suede boots—et voila! Zero-effort sexy. Rolled up sleeves and tousled bed hair will top off the look.
It goes a little something like this: The T-shirt is one of your favourites, you wear it to bed but it wouldn't be out-of-place at a power brunch thanks to your favourite leather biker that amplifies any piece. Your white trainers are so luxe they can hold their own on the FROW or take you to the flower market. When it comes to jeans, it's all about how it fits your hips and the rest depends on your mood. With your signature hair and makeup set, all that's left is for a pair of sunglasses to be set in place. Hands in your pocket—done!
Trousers can be just as evocative and feminine as a skirt or dress. The key is to getting the leg length spot on and the silhouette spot on. From wide-leg to cigarette pants in any colour, the secret to styling them to the smart side is to adding premium leather accessories, adding cashmere knits, and, of course, your versatile three quarter length city coat.
When wearing an oversized coat, leave it open to show your perfect white silk blouse (de Maigret insists on wearing a black bra underneath white, or none at all) tucked into your trusty jeans. Let the collar move about, and lift your sleeves slightly to show bare wrists, and an understated manicure.
