The Surprising Wardrobe Staple That Keeps Selling Out on Net-a-Porter

Have you ever worn a bodysuit? Once upon a time in the late 1980s and early 1990s, this was the savvy girl’s most relied-upon basic. It created smooth lines and fuss-free silhouettes, delivered waist-nipping potential galore and felt enjoyably ballet-like, but despite its versatility the bodysuit found itself marooned in style Siberia for more than two decades. The tide is now turning and it is in favour amongst fashion types once again.

This past summer saw a tremendous waiting list for The Reformation’s lace-up Avalon bodysuit, and more recently Raquel Franco’s bodysuit-dedicated line, Body Editions, has been flying off the virtual rails of Net-a-Porter.com—and no more so than in the form of the Elena, £200, which features some seriously flattering cut-out shoulders and has already been re-ordered after selling out in under a week. The London-based Spanish designer launched her range in 2011 with ‘the aim to redefine the bodysuit as a staple wardrobe piece designed to feel like a second skin, seamless and sensual.’ And it’s true, they do.

While the bodysuit may not look as exciting on a shop floor as a pussy-bow blouse or patterned knit, insiders (as well as the likes of Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian and Chiara Ferragni) swear by them, and there’s an increasing number of existing brands who are introducing them into the regular offering. One try of Body Editions’ or Wolford’s high-tech sculpting fabrics and you’ll see why this simple, surprising, rebooted wardrobe pillar is now being proclaimed as a liberating, modern power piece.
