The One Outfit Formula You'll See Everywhere This Autumn

For all its failings, Instagram remains an unending source of fashion inspiration for me. Yes, there's always a risk that our wardrobes become a physical manifestation of a social media algorithm, but if we can resist the temptation to copy and paste our style, there are so many feeds that can spark creativity. Case in point: It was during one of my scrolling sessions that I came across a simple autumn outfit pairing—baggy jeans and a blazer—that had me rooting through my wardrobe in an attempt to re-create it that very day.

The best thing about this look is that many of us, myself included, may well have the components for it already sitting in our wardrobes. For me, this manifested in a pair of baggy jeans from sustainable denim brand Boyish thrown together with an old checked blazer and white tee from Arket. It's all about embracing that slouch. Disarmingly simple, yes, but it's a silhouette that feels undeniably fresh for A/W 21

You can re-create this baggy jeans–and-blazer pairing in any number of ways, from classic blue denim and beige tailoring to white jeans and a black tuxedo blazer. My top tip would be to keep your base layer on the fitted side to avoid everything looking too shapeless, for example, a tank top or bodysuit would fit the bill nicely. So in the spirit of new-season inspiration, I've put together four baggy jeans–and-blazer outfits that are inspired by some of my favourite Instagram fashion lovers. If the thought of low-slung jeans sends you running for the hills, rest assured that a high-waisted denim silhouette looks just as good, as seen on Aïda Sané.

Megan Adelaide Vega channels a very androgynous look with this simple beige blazer and light denim. The cap and chunky sandals finished the look off nicely.

1. Beige Blazer + Baggy Jeans + White Tee

Style Notes: For an easy way to dip a toe into this outfit trend, just stick to neutrals. Think classic blue denim, a white tee and a beige blazer. I really rate Arket's hopsack blazers for premium-feel tailoring on a budget.

Style Notes: Why not play around with a little high-low styling and throw a smart black blazer over baggy white jeans and finish with chunky trainers and a polished handbag? It's so very "magazine editor at fashion week."

3. Cargo Jeans + Stripe Knit + Grey Blazer

Style Notes: Cargo trousers might not be to everyone's taste, but they offer a fun twist on the baggy jeans trend. Styling-wise, I would balance out their grungy associations with a minimalistic striped knit, a boxy grey blazer and delicate heels.

4. Leather Blazer + Baggy Jeans + Party Top

Style Notes: You might not instinctively reach for baggy denim when it comes to creating a cocktail-ready look, but by subbing in a leather blazer and party top, you instantly add glamour. Finish the look with a flash of print via Aquazzura's leopard-print boots.
